I hate reddit because of the toxic community. You say something even slightly which people don’t agree with, you’re heavily criticized and downvoted to hell. On top of that, the popular and all page is filled with American news, American stuff, All about USA. As a non American it gets very annoying very soon. I do like some of the communities especially for tech support. Or rather Linux support. I hope Lemmy develops and has great success in future. Good luck guys and thank you!

I agree with that, and really hope we can avoid it. Like by having better support for different languages.

If you didn’t mean it to be, then it’s probably better to say that this instance is Anti-fascist.

Because Antifa is being used a lot recently regarding a specific political movement in America.

I mean what I said. The first Antifa was founded 100 years ago in Germany, and the name literally means “anti-fascist action”. So if you have a problem with that, this instance is not for you.

That’s not true at all. Antifa has a long history in Europe, these are some groups are associated with the name antifa and they are a lot older than the current Trump namecalling.

I’m sure this has been said quite a lot but damn if this site doesn’t have the cleanest interface I’ve ever had the pleasure of using.

One thing I really love about lemmy over reddit is the ability to post pictures as comments, it’s a great and really obvious feature that reddit still doesn’t have

Quick question, has there been any thought on redirecting users from https://lemmy.ml -> https://lemmy.ml ? Entering the former does not redirect you to this wonderful site and thus I thought why make this one of the reasons for the newcomer to complain about ;)

I also joined from the reddit AMA and just learning about fediverse (how have I been a software developer for 15 years and not learned about this thing is beyond me). Looking forward to seeing how this thing develops, it is an amazing idea.

I’ve known about the fediverse for a while now but I have struggled actually getting into it for a long time but this was the tipping point. After using this I got a PeerTube account, then I got into mastodon. This whole thing is an amazing concept that I love to death now and I look forward to watching it grow and expand!

I’m also here from the reddit AMA. I’ve bounced around reddit, mastodon, hn, tildes, and some half-baked attempts at reddit alternatives. This one is easily, by a country mile, a much better reddit alternative than anything else out there. In terms of design, the mission, the awesome personal politics of the devs who I 100% support, and the fact that it plugs into a bigger mission of federation, unlike, say, tildes.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. It’s the perfect upgrade from the reddit ui, it’s super fast and the personal politics of the admins really makes it infinitely better than almost every other alternative because they almost always go for “absolute free speech” leading to the people who got kicked off of everything else to end up there like voat (though tbh it could have started racist idk enough)

I’ve been tweaking a lot of things on the comments to make them look better on mobile, and have the tree stand out better. Taking a lot of ideas from slide and boost, some native reddit clients. whaddya think?

beautiful in darker modes, though the reply quote is thicker/brighter and can make the double line messy. I wonder if down the line the person’s quote can be made the same color as that user’s assigned color for the reply thread.

I was going to suggest top level replies deserve a little more breathing room between the above replies, when there is only one or two replies to each it’s a little claustrophobic.

Unfortunately I can’t do the color of the quoted text be the same as the left bar, plus that’d be a little confusing, but I can make them the same pixels.

I can mess with spacing between replies too.

So far I think the comments are looking pretty good. For more inspiration you can look at Apollo on iOS. It’s a fantastic reddit client. Honestly, the current comment structure is pretty close already.

I’m not sure about removing colors from the username link and score distribution. IMO it makes it harder to discern what is what at a glance.

I do have to make the vote scores more clear, but I’m mainly trying to recreate slide, and boost for reddit. The native reddit clients are way past reddit in terms of UI, so I’m trying to recreate that experience not just on mobile, but on desktop, as best I can.

In addition to the slide example below, here’s boost:

    Avoid discord at any cost.

    Why?

Because discord does strong fingerprinting instead of the traditional cookies for identifying people. That’s bad for privacy.

I don’t mind the concept of having chat, but who gets to provide that chat can make or break the feature. If it’s some creepy, invasive group like the people behind Discord, it’s a hard pass for me.

Is there a way to restrict voting to members of the paeticular community only? I run a country community and wouldn’t want non-members to interact with its content - unless they join first.

    • DessalinesOPMA

This will have to wait for private communities, there’s a github issue for that.

    • @AgreeableLandscape

How would we enforce this though? If people wanted to brigade the community, they would probably just subscribe to it just to vote.

Once the user management part of mod powers is robustly implemented (that is, it is anywhere close to what reddit has), it wouldn’t be a problem.

Moderators must, at the minimum, have the power to see the list of their communuties’ users along with time stamps of joining.

Actually the new ranking algorithm could make sense for threads like this, where you want to be informed about new comments. But it doesnt work for new posts.

Maybe we need to rank different types of posts differently?

    • DessalinesOPMA
      link

I’m leaning towards splitting these into two sorts.

      • Activity sort, IE its called hot right now. It’ll be default, and its basically hotRank(score, newest_comment_time)
      • Hot sort, which is what we’ve had until last week. Its hotRank(score, post_creation_time)

Thats where the explanation for the sort options becomes important. And maybe better naming, because those two dont explain it at all.

This is a huge problem with Reddit. New and Top are pretty self explanatory, and everyone’s familiar with Hot (not that it’s well explained either), but what exactly is Rising, Controversal, or Best supposed to mean?!

By the way, I like the idea of using tooltips (AKA help text) to explain the different sorting options. Just my suggestion.
