VLC Media Player - Fast, reliable program that works across all operating systems. Many media players can’t play certain types of files, but VLC always works. For years its always worked. They could have stopped maintaining it, or sold out and put ads in it, or changed vision and created something different out of it.
VLC media player has gifted me with more than 1 week of lifetime already. Before discovering VLC, I had to download divx drivers for each movie file. That involved mindlessly surfing.
VLC just works and has everything. It’s so amazing
Thanks for the recommendation I just tried it out and it’s pretty nice. It’s much faster than the one I was using but could use some polish with things like navigating back when in the unread view.
Same for me. It’s given me some jobs (not a steady one yet ) and it’s amazing how light, and feature filled it is at the same time. I just had to install After Effects recently (after not using it for about a year) and holy moly, it’s 2.5 GB of bloat. AE is pretty great, but it’s not 2.5-GB-and-still-slow great. and I can do almost the same job with Blender, so there’s that.
For quality programs I’d say blender vlc and obs. They are so good that normal people use them because they are good instead of using them as a foss alternative to a better proprietary option.
Linux, and all the random software that allows compatibility with my GAMER mouse, keyboard, and laptop. It’s amazing I can use Linux with out worry that my peripherals will not work!
Rofi: pop up window switcher/launcher also extended as many different pop-up slectors like: emoji picker (rofimoji) and clipboard history picker (greenclip).
pqiv: really powerful, customizable and beautiful image viewer.
Hmm NewPipe is great for watching youtube vids on Android. I also like Red Moon to prevent eyestrain and reduce blue light. Oh and Scarlet Notes FD is great for lists and stuff. All of these are available on the F-Droid app.
I think you meant MediaWiki and not Wikimedia. Wikimedia is a full organization which involves some projects (Wikipedia) and uses MediaWiki as main software for it.
Firefox. Wouldn’t want to use the internet without it. Probably wouldn’t be using this webpage without it.
firefox is so underrated, it’s literally the only browser that isn’t google that is actually viable (sorry otter)
Bitwarden - A password manager
linux :3
Lemmy, mpv, Firefox, Manjaro (GNU/Linux), NewPipe, OBS, Rufus, Alacritty, RPCS3, Lutris…
Aged like milk :)
Love obs, firefox, and manjaro!

Nobody cited Miniflux, a very good self-hosted RSS aggregator with web UI.
Awesome!

To name a few of my favs which were not mentioned yet.
Small list:
sudo
replacementThanks for mentioning Doas. I thought it was exclusively for OpenBSD, but I see that there is an Arch Linux package for it. https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/opendoas/
I like it, it is much faster on my laptop than plain old
sudo
.I have some more in my dotfiles repo :)
Interesting. And I can imagine that Doas is more secure than sudo.
Nice!
Good old linux
