Yeah it looks great, the devs have been working their asses off for a near straight month to get this up and running as fast as possible.

It’s a good question and we had a couple of reasons to split. Even though I’m a dev of chapo.chat, I don’t speak for everyone and it’s my personal take

      1. We needed to implement additional features such as moderation ASAP. Brigades is something that we are concerned with so we couldn’t wait on implementation from maintainers
      2. The changes that we needed and the changes we wanted were rather large. We wanted to lower our code standards and develop much faster, without going through PR back and forth with upstream devs. We intend to clean the mess we created and contribute some of those changes upstream if maintainers want them
      3. Our community is “broad tent”. We allow all manners of lefties on our instance. By communism.lemmy.ml standards we are a bunch of liberals. Also I don’t think shitposting is something that would be welcome on that instance, something that we hold dear to our hearts.

The further it goes the more justified reddit ban of their community appears. Just look at their front page - it’s just mass propaganda on the levels of /r/sino lol

Because apparently it was promoting violence and generic harassment. It was firstly quarantined when a post saying “kill all slave owners” went popular on the sub. After a few months reddit decided it was time to ban a bunch of hateful right-wing reactionary subreddits, and with this excuse they also banned cth just because “both sides bad, no double standards” - but the reality is that all the other banned subs were racist fascist dogwistles that were either pretty much dead (see r/the_donald) or not popular, while cth was the largest and most influential leftist sub on reddit

As far as I remember the “kill all slave owners” post was simply a way to trigger reddit itself and see how they would react to such a statement. Like, “we don’t care reddit, let’s see how you react to this”. Most of the sub agreed on the fact that with posts like that, it was a matter of time for reddit to take action. Though it looks like nobody actually cared. Honestly, I browsed the sub daily and didn’t see any kind of post that was this controversial. Though the “kill all slave owners” became a meme in the sub and people started to use it ironically, and other similar jokes started to pop out

You could never tell whether the cth hive-mind was promoting something in a serious way or just out of edginess, that was one of the funny aspects of the sub. I wasn’t participating enough in the conversation to be able to catch every inside joke of theirs, so I really don’t know how to look at it. Definitely some of the subscribers are probably serious when talking about killing slave owners though

at this point they have forked lemmy into what they call hexbear, made specifically to accommodate to the rapid growth of their site. It also has some nice features like pronouns and sitewide announcements.

Lol make up your mind - you’re aware than imperialist and liberal would be on different ends of a political compass 😂

Also its quite funny that you call me imperialist while defending arguably the most imperialistic country in the world.

You’re so dim that if you were a pencil you’d be a fucking eraser lol

A lot of more tankie leftists have a blindspot when it comes to China, so I’m not going to get into that for now. But many also admire China for it’s anti poverty action, rapid modernisation while maintaining a relatively planned economy and view it as an alternative to free market capitalism – hence offering their critical support. It is also true that some of the reports from Uyghur camps are sensationalised to create anti-China fervour in the west to whet an appetite for sanctions/divert attention from domestic troubles.

Liberal and imperialist can absolutely be on the same side of the coin – Democrats in America consistently label themselves as liberal and launch interventions into other, poorer countries. There is bipartisan support for passing expanded military budgets and continuance of Monroe Doctrine-esque policies. They often support the toppling of elected leftist leaders like Evo Morales in Bolivia (note the initial support of the NYT for the military coup). I’d recommend reading up Chomsky – Hopes and Prospects is a decent book.

So any foreign affairs is imperialist? Have you looked into China’s foreign “investments” and this very own rail belt? What out extreme and forceful “unification” of China by conquering Tibet? What about fake islands and claims in East sea to the point of calling it “south China’s sea” ? What about government sanctioned fishing piracy?

If that’s not imperialism I don’t fucking know what is.

What a load of bullshit propaganda you sheep. Also what’s up with this US VS China bullshit - you’re aware there are 6 more billion people on this planet right?

Hi, just to be clear, I don’t think China does not have imperialist ambitions. Tibet, South China Sea, B&R have a definite imperial component. Sorry if it came off that way. Just making clear that liberalism has imperialist motivations too.

Apart from that, if any of the rest seems like propoganda I can provide sources. Additionally US and China are global powers locked into conflict at the moment, and this thread was about China. The world does often function like US allies vs China with Russia offering nominal support to China in some contexts and also doing it’s own thread.

You somehow imply that having a military base makes you imperialist when it’s just defence alliance 101.

So if the US wages illegal wars on the other side of the world, installs dictatorships and overthrows elected governments its not imperialism? But when China trades with other countries without interfering in their business, that’s imperialism? Thanks, I’m gonna tell Lenin about this incredible insight of yours.
