Because apparently it was promoting violence and generic harassment. It was firstly quarantined when a post saying “kill all slave owners” went popular on the sub. After a few months reddit decided it was time to ban a bunch of hateful right-wing reactionary subreddits, and with this excuse they also banned cth just because “both sides bad, no double standards” - but the reality is that all the other banned subs were racist fascist dogwistles that were either pretty much dead (see r/the_donald) or not popular, while cth was the largest and most influential leftist sub on reddit
As far as I remember the “kill all slave owners” post was simply a way to trigger reddit itself and see how they would react to such a statement. Like, “we don’t care reddit, let’s see how you react to this”. Most of the sub agreed on the fact that with posts like that, it was a matter of time for reddit to take action. Though it looks like nobody actually cared. Honestly, I browsed the sub daily and didn’t see any kind of post that was this controversial. Though the “kill all slave owners” became a meme in the sub and people started to use it ironically, and other similar jokes started to pop out
You could never tell whether the cth hive-mind was promoting something in a serious way or just out of edginess, that was one of the funny aspects of the sub. I wasn’t participating enough in the conversation to be able to catch every inside joke of theirs, so I really don’t know how to look at it. Definitely some of the subscribers are probably serious when talking about killing slave owners though
