I wanted a short twitter handle and I read somewhere that the name xkcd came about because no username with actual meaning sticks as long as you yourself are changing. sure enough, it’s been a long time with it now…

My username was inspired by Randal Monroe’s write up on the xkcd name. I wont go any further into explaining it, because it’s a bit of a puzzle. My name however, was chosen because it’s meaningless. It represents only me. Same with the pic I’m using. It’s a render of a drawing I did with pencil and paper. I’m the only one with the master copy, and the only one who can create true derivatives.

there’s probably an artcrit to be written there about the nature of a “true derivative” in the age of digital reproduction

My username means free/independent/unconstrained in my mother language, which is Hindi. I have been using it in one way or other since a few years now.

I was playing Counter-Strike: Source when I saw that one of the opponents were called “Doctor Derpstein”. So I jokingly called myself “Doctor Herbstein”. The name stuck somewhat. I shortened it to “DrHerbstein”, and later still to just “Herbstein”. I don’t really like the name that much, but at this point I’m used to it.

I think I was in 7th grade when I came up with the original version. When I started my bachelor people started calling me “Herb” for short - even IRL. At this point it would simply feel weird to change it.

Fun fact about the name: it’s also the name of a small-ish city in Germany. I only found this out relatively recently when I tried searching the username on google. That got me a nice chuckle.

I use a different usernames on each website, each one coming from something on my mind in the moment I choose.
This time, I was in-between soldering a bunch of leds for a binary clock and I just happened to read of lemmy during a break.

My initials, that happen to match a very well known encryption software.
