I’m betting that right now those 5 conservative judges are being rapidly moved to a secure location by the secret service. This is so incredibly fucked, just bare-faced 1950’s era misogny.

“The inescapable conclusion is that a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions,” Alito writes.

You know what is deeply rooted in the U.S.’s history and traditions, though?

    Racial segregation.

Part of me hopes that the façade of Democratic party line politics will finally be shattered by this, but somehow I feel like it’s just gonna get worse.

This sucks. This will ruin a lot of lives. Maybe people will at least drop the notion that this country is the ‘freest’ place in history now.

While its true that the growth of capital is dependent on a growing population, and that they usually use immigration and child-control policies to restrict / grow population based on the demand for labor, I think in this case its less long-term thinking, and more about control over women’s bodies.

This might seem like a correct long-term decision for capitalists, IE they need a growing population if they want to out-produce and have armies ready to fight China, but they should know now that 1) production is not coming back, and the US will not re-industrialize, and 2) wars don’t really need that many footsoldiers, and 3) a draft isn’t politically feasible any more since Vietnam.

This really just has biblical roots in the subjugation of women: By restricting / criminalizing abortions, they can lock women into indentured servitude / house slavery to men, the ultimate goal of the far right, and which these conservative judges are all having wet-dreams about.

              1. Wages in the imperial core are too high, which is why production has been and continues to be exported to the global south. Not until wages reach parity, which isn’t gonna happen until the US empire falls.

              2. Modern wars are mostly fought via the air and sea. Many of the US “soldiers” operating in afghanistan did so operating drones from military bases within the US.

The democrats had majorities for years and still refused to push through the women’s health protection act that would’ve codified abortion rights into law. They totally let this happen.

“Liberal atheists against abortion”, with a peace sign no less, made me shudder with multiple instances of simultaneous cringe and second hand embarrasment

  • I just tried to look up if this even applies to victims of rape (obviously anyone should be able to get an abortion, but that’s even worse), and Jesus Fucking Christ some of these “”“pro-life”“” people are disgusting

My teacher did a “both sides” with fascism. She said that while fascism is mostly bad, it has some good qualities such as nationalism. I’m not surprised, she grew up on a military base.

Not yet, it’s a draft opinion - so they were planning to overturn it, but then somebody leaked it. Chances are even if they are going to overturn it after the reaction that comes from this leak, it won’t be official for another few months, then it’ll be down to state law.

It’s possible. Alito, in the leaked opinion, states that the reasoning behind striking down Roe does not apply to other recently recognized rights (that goes all the way back to interracial marriage laws). But some arch-conservative’s like my own Senator (Indiana’s) Mike Braun would take you back to the original ruling on interracial marriage being unconstitutional.

IMO the reasoning he uses applies to all the rights derived in similar fashion by the court, and the weak attempt to restrict to abortion is not that persuasive. Gay marriage, contraception access etc are all in jeopardy.

I think most french revolutionaries would disagree, not out of contempt for revolutionary violence (which we would like to do without but is impossible) but because the guillotine is a deadly abstraction which represents absolute cruel State power that can fall on anyone. You may be interested in reading this article about how the guillotine emerged and evolved as a symbol, and why the Paris Commune burned the guillotine.

Well, it won’t be nationwide. They’ll return these issues to the states. So liberal states, or states with strong liberal majorities, will likely not be impacted as they’ll be able to use whatever laws they had prior to Roe, or invent new ones with relative ease. But for people (like me) in deep red states, it will open the way for an absolute prohibition on abortion.

Biden’s only option would be to whip up legislation that would codify Roe as the law of the land (as he and Obama both promised to do). I would say that’s unlikely to happen, especially because it couldn’t pass the Senate. So people in blue states will likely continue as if nothing has happened and people in red states will see abortion prohibited or access greatly reduced.
