Having specific mandatory rituals is a symptom of a cult, so yeah.

          there are two problems:

I did not conclude American nationalism is a religion because a researcher said so, I provided the video for anyone who’s willing to watch, examine his arguements (that are explained in 4 videos I think), and reach a conclusion. in fact I didn’t even say American nationalism is a religion, I said it doesn’t surprise me that a researcher believes it is. I’m not really appealing to anyone or anything if I don’t make an assertion.

          the second problem is

The fallacy occurs when someone claims a certain conclusion is true because someone else, who is not an authority on the subject, says it is true.

he’s a doctor in religion studies as far as I am aware, so he’s indeed an authority on the subject. not to mention that he has reached this conclusion by studying material written by people who know about this subject. what you’re saying is like telling someone they can’t quote scientists talking about their field of study.

I said it doesn’t surprise me that a researcher believes it is. I’m not really appealing to anyone or anything if I don’t make an assertion.

You endorsed the conclusion, whether you’re willing to admit it or not, and the fact that you would even advance this argument is proof that you’re not interested in good-faith dialog (as is this completely unhinged rant in this thread).

I’m not going to play sophistry with you. Bye.

sorry if anything I said was offending to you, but reading it back, I do not see where I was being aggressive, so I don’t really understand what made you assume I’m not endorsing his view on the topic, I’m arguing in bad faith, or that the examples I gave in my comment make a “completely unhinged rant”.

just to clear, I did endorse his concluision, because I partly agree with it. I think American nationalism has very detrimental charachteristics that resemble an unhealthy religion and I think it can (and has in the past) cause great harm, to Americans themselves and to the rest of the world. do I personally believe that it is indeed a religion? no.

the fact that you would even advance this argument is proof that you’re not interested in good-faith dialog

I don’t understand how you reached such a conclusion, but I shared an educational video, and you implied I was using fallacies, to which I responded explaining how I wasn’t doing that. how does it mean I’m arguing in bad faith?

(as is this completely unhinged rant in this thread).

well, you’re kinda right, I guilty as hell when comes to ranting xD

but I think I provided some good examples of why I think his conclusions are not far from truth. you can watch the videos for yourself and make your own informed opinion.

I’m not going to play sophistry with you. Bye.

that’s a bit ironic, because you’re accusing me of logical fallacies and sophistry, but you’re the one who made the discussion about me by going off-topic.

ps: would be interesting if you happen to be an American who was too offended by my statement about american nationalism, and it made you practice some American nationalism. it would be all paitriot-ception.

I haven’t looked up the researcher, but there are researchers of chiropractic ‘science’ as well.

you didn’t agree with him and thought yeah, he must be some nutjob?

there are many things about American nationalism that really resemble a religion, imagine it like this, every morning at school you pray to a flag and your classmates accompany you in the ritual, that flag is so important that an athlete makes national news for having a pose that’s considered against the flag code. then suddenly your state dicides those teams that don’t play the national anthem aren’t faithful enough, so let’s stop the funding. and you’ve got “in God we trust” on your dollors, and your supreme court says it’s not religious, and votes for it to remain this way. and your politicians always pray at the end of their speeches, and everyone believes in a redemption called the American Dream^TM , and guns are the holy objects that are held more valuable than human lives, and then you’ve got this superiority complex that makes you think your the most righteous. should I go on and talk about evangelicals too?

at what point does it stop being just nationalism and becomes a religion? considering that most definitions of religion don’t even exclude fandoms or consumerism, it’s not controversial to say that.

now does Norway really compare to this? when was the last time you invaded a country because God had told your president to do so? what you describe is more like trying to remain a nation with the same collective identity.

isn’t it a bit to far to consider calling others crazy a form of ableism? I understand that the intention behind its use is to offend, but I don’t think it’s reason enough to receive an admin warning.

I really don’t like it, as its a personal attack that’s easy to rely on for lazy trolls who don’t want to describe why they disagree with something. I know its not a DSM classification or anything but its still used to demean people with mental disabilities.

@soferman@lemmy.ml does that all the time, he doesnt need to the specific word “crazy” to do it.

Yeah he thinks people who don’t agree with his political views aren’t “normal human beings”. The implication presumably being thst they hsve some kind of mental disorder. The abelism is clear if you have that context.

Calling others tankie scum or authoritarian defenders for a month or two is not exactly normal civil behaviour. None of the people that criticised you ever needed to use slurs against you to make their point.

The last hope of Americans uniting for their hegemonic supremacy is either ultra nationalism, or anti China xenophobia. Nothing else will unite all Americans like sheep.

LOL okay patriot, leaking reddit Sinophobia disease here, I bet you call Snowden a traitor too

The one who needs to be dealt with in ICJ courts is USA and their genocidal allies, stripping them of their warmongering powers and imposing permanent penalties on them. Cannot wait for the day other countries step up to become superpowers that compete and overtake the Western imperialist hegemony without flickering a single stone at them.

Btw I voted for Biden and the democratic party in 2020. The antipathy against the CCP is not among the GOP but rather across both sides of the politxal spectrum in the US, and the whole west.

The only place my sentiment is unpopular is only within the CCP itself

Oh wow you are sure feeling big by getting your buddies to gang up on me like that

                  Quit with that whataboutsim bullshit.

Also CCP propaganda is not a neutral news are not a facts source. You can claim some western media are biased. There may be some politization of events for sure, but when you have other media like Al Jazeera are likely neutral non-aligned and they still talk about the genocide. What about the satellite images of all those prisons made in Xinjang?

Lets face it CCP assholes (and I mean the CCP not China) are very racist towards foreigners.

Either way if I truly am wrong what non biased sources you recommend?
