Cross-post idea
5

Would it be possible, or even desirable, to post a single thread to multiple communities? I was just looking back on the idea by /u/AgreeableLandscape for privacy violation tracking and ended up in the /c/privacy version, which was dead, instead of the /c/libre_community version with a decent number of comments. I am not saying I think it should be a certain way, just throwing spaghetti at the wall.

Edit: complete half formed thoughts

Edit2: learned about mentions and links on lemmy

Moderation would be the main challenge. If the same content is posted to multiple communities with opposing viewpoints, it would likely become a wasteland due to moderator infighting.

This. Different communities are going to have different mods, userbases, votes on a post, etc. “Merging” doesn’t really make sense when you factor those in.

Also I pretty much built lemmy that posts have a parent community / belong to a community.

I think it would be interesting to participate in those discussions. If one would want to avoid the said moderation issue, one just wouldn’t post to multiple communities at the same time… simple

Moderation issues aren’t usually a concern for the person making the post, they tend to crop up a few hours later when the arguments start - by which point the ship has already sailed. From a technical standpoint, how such a post would be moderated is something that would need careful consideration.

It wouldn’t be preferable IMO. Different communities will have different user bases, with different input on said post.

It’s not just the comments that would need “merging”, but the upvotes and downvotes, etc.

Because they really are completely different, I can’t even think of a good way to merge them on your front page. They have different scores, potentially different titles, etc.

Well, I had envisioned it as posting to multiple communities simultaneously, instead of the current model of posting and then using the cross-post option. Thus it would always have been a single instance with a history that was shared out to multiple communities.

I too had considered the idea that different communities may respond to posts differently. I thought it might be up to the posting individual or if mods could remove their community from the post.

I appreciate you taking enough time entertaining the idea to form a response.

That way is definitely too complicated. What we could do is link to the same actual thread from both communities.

That wouldn’t be easy to do, since posts have a parent community : IE when you make a post, it belongs to one community.

There is already a button to cross-post to other communities. Isnt that basically the same thing that you are suggesting?

I think he’s suggesting an option to merge comments from different cross-posts into one thread.

/u/nutomic what /u/AgreeableLandscape said. The same thread appears to all posted communities such that all comments are together and all points are reflected in both communities.

IMO this would be a good idea to have as an option.

Also agree with it being an option if implemented
