Do allergies count as an autoimmune issue? I’m allergic to penicillin, which is actually kind of frustrating if I get sick because it’s the standard general purpose antibiotic to use, and the alternatives are often hard on the stomach and make me really nauseous.

Nothing too serious, fortunately. But I do have recurrent aphthous stomatitis (canker sores), which as I understand are caused by a mild form of triggered autoimmunity against the mucous lining in the mouth.

This mild form is sometimes able to cause enough pain to ruin a full week or two for me, so I can begin to imagine how bad it is for people with more serious autoimmune disorders.

There’s a good book called Immune by Phillipp Dettmer all about the immune system.

Severe asthma. Usually with medication I’m good, aside from some shortness of death. At least I can show my breathing machine off to my friends!

For autoimmune disease the best thing you can do is eat the opposite of a vegan diet. So just meat and salt. You’ll feel great. Also prefer red meat.
