I remember several years ago r/Casual Conversation was brimming with interesting and candid discussion. As it gained more and more traction I saw it go through the same evolution that killed r/IAmA and r/askreddit. More popularity means more traffic, more traffic means more posts, more posts means stricter moderating, stricter moderating means less “casual” posts. Before long it was just another upvote machine, and that’s when I dipped out.

So having said that, how is your morning going? Did you do anything cool this weekend?

Oh wow, I completely forgot about r/casualconversation. Never subbed but I used to see it on r/all often, but it’s been years.

That said, I caught up on sleep mostly and messed around with my 3d printers. Got an appt in about an hour and couldn’t sleep last night so been up all night, lol. So much for catching up.

How deep are you into 3d printers? Do you have a couple you are learning about or do you have a room full of them? People seem to gravitate to the extremes 🤣

I’ve had 1 Prusa MK3S+ for a little over a year, and I just got a 2nd one about a month ago. It’s true, one is not enough after a while. I’ve gotten into to CAD design using Fusion 360 and I have tons of designs waiting to be printed. Have done a bunch of mods as well as a printed enclosure for one and currently printing the 2nd. It’s an awesome hobby. I’m a disabled veteran and I don’t work anymore so 3D print stuff takes up my time nowadays. Finding little things around the house that I can make better by prints is so fun to me.

That’s awesome, such a practical hobby. I tried to get into it with an UP MINI years ago but had too many competing hobbies already (read: not retired) so didn’t really catch for me. I’m sure it’ll come back at another time though

I’d been following 3D printing for years and finally had some extra dough to get a nice printer. And now I just want a whole farm of them, haha.

I’ll miss all the subreddits full of folks discovering identities, finding new ways to understand themselves. I hope we’ll hit a critical mass over here so folks can find themselves!

Me too. It used to feel like people actually listened. These days when I think I have something valuable to contribute, it takes me like three tries just to post it because it gets removed by the automods for some arbitrary reason. Most of the time I just say fuck it and move on. Anyway, glad you’re here and welcome to the community!

Chat@beehaw.org seems like what you’re looking for.

Having a good morning and had a good busy weekend. But not enough time for myself. You?

Good! I had a comfortably lazy weekend- nothing special but hey that’s the beauty of it. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what “wasting time” actually means. If I spend an entire day reading a good book or binging a show I really like, is that waste of time? I would say no. But if I spend a whole day browsing memes, I feel like shit for not doing anything constructive with my time. So what’s the real difference? The Reddit exodus has lead me to try and spend my time more productively, but the older I get, the fuzzier the line gets between recreation and productivity. If I spend an hour watching a documentary about lions, I feel like I’m expanding my horizons. But you could say that since lions have no place in my day-to-day life, learning about them is a waste of my time. Knowing a bunch of stuff about lions is effectively just as useless as knowing a bunch of one-liners from action movies. I don’t really have a point to this, its just been on my mind lately.

You sound like you know wassup; what’s the quickest way for someone like me to navigate to a suggested community like the one you’ve mentioned? It’s clearly not a URL extension, and clicking the link wants me to send an email XD I know I can search, but are there shortcuts around this place?

Chat is a community at the beehaw.org instance If you copy and past the link into the search bar in your instance you should be able to find it, sometimes it takes a couple of tries if nobody is subscribed to that community on your instance. Also, the link !chat@beehaw.org should also work I believe?

Thank you for taking the time :) for once, it has finally clicked that I can drop the topic@instance on the end of my “signed in” instance domain with a /c/. Man, people who aren’t computer people or curious thinkers will never figure this place out.

Although maybe that’s a good thing.

Yeah there are a bunch of ways to do things. And tbh, I didn’t do it that way ever myself. But true that does work.

It currently really is a place for tinkerers

Seems the Lemmy servers are getting hammered right now with the thousands of new users.

It was nice to finally have free time with a lot of sun this weekend. Spent all Saturday drinking Pimm’s on the roof terrace with a friend of a friend. Then most of Sunday playing Zelda TOTK.

Yeah, I’m doing my best to respond to these comments but this site is stickier than fly paper right now. I hope Lemmy can survive the hug o’ death. I’m gonna put on my tinfoil hat and say that if I were the CEO I would be all hands on deck trying to overload these small servers with bots to stifle the migration. I almost gave up on making my account because of the servers, and that was like a week ago. I can only imagine how clogged up things are now.

That sounds like a good weekend to me, I haven’t played TOTK but I’ve heard so many good things about it. How does it compare to Breath of the Wild?

It’s much better than BOTW IMO - like BOTW feels like a beta in comparison. Obviously one huge point is all the contraptions and stuff you can create (and the awesome boss fights it allows), but even just the open world feels so much more fleshed out and a bit more like the earlier Zelda games.

I’m not really a huge Zelda fan though (aside from Ocarina of Time), but it’s been the best game I’ve played in years so far. I think only The Witcher 3 felt similar recently. There’s still Starfield and BG3 to look forward to this year too!

my morning’s going really well. watched some bluey with my daughter before she got picked up by her grandma and i’m currently being groomed by my new 11 week old kitten while i ignore a meeting. weekend was pretty good too. got the cat and played some dnd for the first time in like 3 months. we all forgot some pretty basic rules but it was a blast. our wizard killed 2 players at once by dropping a levitated one 20 feet ontop of another one. it was pretty funny.

An absolutely fantastic kids show. If you have little kids i 100% recommend checking it out. The show is just as much for the parents as it is the kids.

My morning is going good. I have the day off and a friend’s birthday party to go to later. I’m going to spend some time rehearsing music for the barbershop chorus I sing in, and maybe crochet a little bit.

Got back from dropping my son at table-tennis. My neighbour’s dog was trotting toward my house and my cat was sat in front.

He is scared of my cat because she hissed at him once. Poor boy was stuck in a limbo, unable to go back was the terrifying black and white lioness was blocking one route and and my car blocked the other.

Eventually he decided the car was safer than the cat and went home.

Went to an agricultural show over the weekend, saw all the animals, petted the goats, cheered the horses. Ate the food, but it seems like it’s gone downhill on that front lately, the food offering was always the best part of the show but it was just a let down.

I assume it’s the world situation of all the stuff being more expensive so cheap good Street food isn’t much a thing now, but such is life! Anyway I hope you OP, and all those reading this have a good week <3

    Seconding !chat@beehaw.org!

I had a great weekend, it was my friend’s birthday and he always organizes a kind of “mini-Olympics” where we just play sports in the park all day, complete with banners for the champions! My body is now killing me but my spirit feels rejuvenated.

It’s great fun to go play outside with your friends as an adult, it’s not something we do nearly as much as we should. Go play outside! Kick a ball! Throw a ball! Run! Climb on things!
