Running Element in a browser on your PinePhone, really? I wonder why that is worth reporting, of course it works. If the cameras work, such applications will work.

Also I wonder why that post mentions you have to install Element on a webserver yourself, I’m pretty sure you can just use pre-hosted instances like https://app.element.io

It’s worth reporting because previously the camera usually would just work in a few camera apps like Megapixels, but not in other apps, e.g. in the web browser for Jitsi. I agree that you can most likely just use https://app.element.io and the important part are the env variables in the Firefox launcher + the recent Megi kernel.

There are also very few web-based chat apps that work well on a mobile display. Most services require you to install the app to access on mobile. (Although you can get the desktop interface by changing your user agent) So sure, it isn’t the most exciting thing but it is cool to know that you can access Matrix from anywhere as long as you have a web browser.

Personal anecdote: i have very rarely seen a person make a video chat with a phone. I have seen a few video conferences for work/non-profits from a desktop computer, but not a single person i know would consider video-calls a feature/requirement when considering a phone. In fact, most people i know (even if not especially the least-technical ones) explicitly put a sticker on the cameras to avoid accidental leakage.

No, because Telegram has a centralized and proprietary backend and shouldn’t be used.

Good to note that I don’t necessarily prefer Element, I prefer Matrix. I rather use clients like KDE’s NeoChat actually :winking face:
