To celebrate August 24 Vladimir Zelensky took to Instagram to upload a series of portraits of commanders born in post-Soviet Ukraine.

Unsurprisingly one serviceman’s image, alongside his full name and credentials, was pictured wearing a Nazi insignia of the 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division.

That unit of the SS recruited primarily Ukrainian collaborators, and has been accused of committing several massacres in Poland.

If I were running propaganda for the Ukrainian government, I’d want to make sure nobody showed up in photos wearing Nazi insignia. Especially nowadays, when it’s so easy to check online.

But then again, libs and neonazis (did I just write the same word twice?) have never been particularly noted for their intelligence.

Evidently, they don’t actually need to. They can dog-whistle nazis for support with stuff like this. It doesn’t cause them any harm because anyone actually calling it out gets dismissed as a conspiracy theorist / tankie because Westerners are so severely brainwashed.

  • Btw before someone say something about the historicity of symbols - both golden lion and three crowns has been historical symbols of region of Galicia in this or that form, but only once they shown up together - in the CoA of this SS division.

In that same photo set is a dude with an iron cross. And then a series of photos honoring Boris Johnson in the “Walk of the Brave” which is something you would think even liberals would be suspect of.

I like how they can’t find a single person on the Ukrainian side that isn’t wearing Nazi symbols but they’re still adamant that not only are there no Ukrainian Nazis, but that the real fascists are somehow the Russians who, for one, don’t wear Nazi symbols into battle.

At this point I’m just running out of things to say. Where do we go from here? Apparently we’re just okay with Nazis now. Ukraine is an openly fascist government but people, who consider themselves to be anti-nazi, are falling over themselves to praise them, protect them and bury any evidence of wrong doing.

Are we supposed to wait until they go apeshit on a country that we aren’t trained to hate before we can go back to saying Nazis are bad?

The US has always been okay with Nazis. America is the premier fascist state, a first proto type of it’s kind. Hitler and the various fascists and proto fascists in imperial Germany modelled their ideology and political ambitions off of the United states. We don’t think of the US as a fascist state because 1. The US obviously works overtime in it’s PR to keep people from thinking that way and 2. Fascism here has already succeeded. The mass genocide and brutal forced settlement has already happened and finished. We’re just living in the aftermath of that horrible and disgusting history, just like the Germans would be living in in an alternate world 50 years after they won WW2.

You’ve got to realize that most of their views are created by media and governments. The picture they are presented is one of a sad Ukraine that’s a victim of terror from Russia. I give them the benefit of the doubt and say they are misguided rather than evil.

I find myself explaining my views more to my surroundings. Yesterday I talked to family about how Zelensky banned opposition parties and undermines labor laws. They had no idea.

You and I actively seek other sides of this story to expand our views. They don’t. They see their news which has a certain political aim. It’s necessary we keep explaining ourselves otherwise the fascist sides in this war win, because they get the superstar treatment from the media. A lot of people are willing to listen, especially with the high inflation wrecking them.
