Yes that’s true. I actually try to prefer federated alternatives for social networks and distributed for 1 to 1 conversations when possible, even if federated could also work fine.

I feel like at the moment, federation is already a big step forward. Well, more of a leap actually.
Moreover federation is already complicated enough to jump straight to the end, although it lays down a fairly useful base to start with full distribution/decentralization in the future. And when we will be ready for the final step, I will cheer with you!

Speaking of decentralization, I think something like this is a great example.

Scuttlebutt community is awesome! Software is great too but it’s still javascript only, though there is ongoing work on Rust and Golang implementations from what I’ve heard

          Good to know!
I’m not checking the project every day because I’m not too much into social networks. I prefer platforms like these that are more around “knowledge” than around people that I may see just by leaving my house. Still, knowing that other languages are being used means that the project is flourishing!

          You’re welcome!
If you would like to discover other interesting projects, take a look at Alternative Internet. This is one of the biggest lists I’ve ever found.

          Edit:
I forgot to add that while the list is big, not every project is still active, nor follows the initial propositions anymore. So, take anything on that page with a grain of salt.
