What keeps you visiting? Any favorite subs?
I want the project to be successful! And I like Reddit’s format but prefer smaller online communities. It’s exciting to be in at the beginning of something, to see how it grows.

I totally agrees! Smaller communities on any websites are often much better. More human and better moderation. It is why I keep on Reddit, there are still some nice tiny communities but this website is even better!

I’m of the idea that one can know a lot of people superficially, but the great thing that friendship is can only be true for small groups. It may seems unrelated, but for me it makes sense as an analogy.There’s also federation, open source trust and decentralization involved. Being pro privacy, power to the people and all that, I see mega-centralized services as bad.
Not that they are all bad, but what stops them from going rogue if they are the only one in charge?Yes that’s true. I actually try to prefer federated alternatives for social networks and distributed for 1 to 1 conversations when possible, even if federated could also work fine.
I feel like at the moment, federation is already a big step forward. Well, more of a leap actually.
Moreover federation is already complicated enough to jump straight to the end, although it lays down a fairly useful base to start with full distribution/decentralization in the future. And when we will be ready for the final step, I will cheer with you!Speaking of decentralization, I think something like this is a great example.
Scuttlebutt community is awesome! Software is great too but it’s still javascript only, though there is ongoing work on Rust and Golang implementations from what I’ve heard

I’m not checking the project every day because I’m not too much into social networks. I prefer platforms like these that are more around “knowledge” than around people that I may see just by leaving my house. Still, knowing that other languages are being used means that the project is flourishing!

I want to be a part of communities made for and by those communities. Not platforms made to data harvest and control communities.
Because we desperately need alternatives to the walled gardens of big tech, and Lemmy feels like a great alternative to some of those already. It’s blazing fast and I can self-host it on my raspberry pi or whatever. Forget the shitty ad-riddled hellscape of the maximize-shareholder-value past, this is the future we were promised.
Because I like open source technology.
Not yet because the communities are still tiny. But Lemmy is a great idea and could replace Reddit anytime soon.
Because it’s part of the fediverse and free you can be sure that you won’t pay with your data for it. Also if a community is too large for you, then just start your own server or join another one. This brings some diversification back and makes the Internet a much more interesting place. That goes directly against core principles of any big company in the platform sector and I like it :)
Also at the moment there is much less noise here than on Reddit and the website is blazingly fast!
Federation of social media is something I’ve only just gotten into but it is really cool to see “free as in freedom” for social media.
To support a federated floss project which is not led by yet another BDFL but has a software developing council.

I’ve not seen it referred to as that, usually see “Benevolent Dictator For Life” (BDFL) which means that there is (usually) one persion over the project that has final say it what goes on with the project and the community around it.

Because:
- I'm interested of the fediverse in general - a Reddit clone in fediverse has lots of potential - the community in general - I want to contribute to this community - I'm also interested in hosting my own instance once federation gets fully functionalI honestly think that a reddit-like website is perfect for the fediverse because domains are like a third tier on reddit above subreddits and multireddits which is kind of makes sense.

reddit’s gone to shit, and with federation fringe content can exist, and be white/blacklisted appropriately rather than straight up removed.
I came before and I didn’t stayed. because there wasn’t really any content. But now I stay because:
- I love the project of a Reddit alternative on the fediverse (edit: and open-source of course)
- The community is growing, so really I already found very nice things here I didn’t found on Reddit.
- The community is more friendly than Reddit.

Because voat is down and because this place promises to be what reddit used to be, or perhaps better - thanks to the FOSS code and activitypub. And so far the only thing to doubt this promise is open declaration of politics - well, at least they get full marks for honesty and upfrontness - again, better than reddit.
As for favourite communities, I suppose it wouldn’t be too out of place to promote c/bharat, which I have created just today (because c/India was created and abandoned 8 months ago by an inactive user).

Ok, I can’t make sense of these terms and at this point I don’t pretend that I care for American politics one way or other. I am an Indian, from actual India, and if you want to know my relevant beliefs, I believe that Nazis were the national socialists of Germany - that before their power grab they were indeed socialists and pro-workers along with being nationalists and anti-jew. I have also read that Marx owned sizeable investment in shares - made handsome profit. Hypocrites! I have read about Bolshevik and Maoist ‘excesses’, as well as laisez faire in London - and that neither is undeniable.
And both Nazis and Marxists are similarly hypocratic - they aim to centralize all power in a few hands, and abuse that against their percieved opponents. (This was the problem with centralized servers as well and attempts are being made to do something similar on mastodon et al.)
Yes, both voat and lemmy are similar as far as I can see. They are decidedly unfriendly to one another, but they are similar.
I was regular with voat in its formative phase but haven’t logged in on voat for months now. I used mainly for the tech news and privacy related stuff - Indian community there was a dud.
In my experience, all young social networks are good places with good people and nice content; and they all become bad once a certain quality of crowd starts dominating the discourse.

To clarify, I don’t really care for ideological politics. I think that ideologies are just a cover for real politics - that, that is their only purpose.
Take the example of equality. Most people care for equality as long as they think they themselves are the have nots who’ll gain from more equality at the expense of the haves. But the moment tables turn - when equality requires them to sacrifice for other have nots, they’ll start leaving the wagon of equality, or whatever else is making them pay. Or, if they are politicians, they’ll keep on harping equality, equality, equality while themselves enriching way beyond equality - while hiding their own riches from the public eye.
Is apolitical no longer a word?
I’m here because I’m sick of (American) politics everywhere, especially reddit. I think it’s best to keep politics contained in its own community… there’s plenty of other interesting stuff to discuss!
