IOT - Internet of things

Internet of Shit

I have seen this cartoon all over the place…and I just got it.

I get the point, but I also I don’t really like the moral behind it for the same reason I don’t like that “if it’s free, you’re the product” patter. Many things are free or subsidized just because there are nice people that spend their time and money because they simply think it’s the right thing to do.

There is a big difference if something is made by individuals (like most open source projects), or made by a for profit company (which this image is talking about).

I think “if it’s free then you’re the product” is good general advice to keep in mind using larger applications. I don’t think it applies well to smaller projects though. It’s a good system to think about but I do agree that it’s not a great phrase.

“Internet of stinks” as Stallman calls it is a better approach.

Here’s the thing. I love the idea of IOT, provided the devices running on it are FOSS. For example, I would never in a million years run a Google Home in my house, but I would gladly hook up some Raspberry Pis running Python scripts to various places.

Funy! And I’m currently working on IoT project, making it funny in double.
