I’m trying to add icons to the communities I moderate, and Libre Culture has been a difficult one. Libre culture is more than just open source, and more than even free (libre) software as it includes hardware too, plus non-tech stuff. It’s an ideology, one that to my knowledge doesn’t have a generally accepted symbol. I’ve been trying to find an icon that encompasses all of Libre culture, but have been unsuccessful, so I’m asking for help.

Can you recommend an icon that you think effectively represents all of Libre culture? It can either be an existing one from the internet or custom made. My main requirements are that it not be inappropriate, indecent or offensive (should go without saying), and that it be licensed under a libre license, like creative commons.

Thanks! Right now the two most likely candidates is this or the clenched fist icon.

I would strongly advice against using a clenched fist. It can be associated with violence.

Do not use any symbols that could easily be misinterpreted.

A copyright symbol with wings? A speechbubble with wings?

Libre cultue actually doesn’t have much to do with being free as in cost. It’s main concern is free as in freedom.

I know this comment was a joke, but I wanted to clarify this for people who don’t know.

Yeah, kind of, it’s because Spanish differentiates between “gratis” (free as in beer) of “libre” (free as in freedom).

Fun fact: AFAIK most other languages have a distinction between free as in freedom and free as in beer.

I had considered a clenched fist symbol, but it felt too general for this community specifically. If someone can put a techy spin on it, that’d be awesome!

Although, this com, unity isn’t just about technology. If a lot of people here are okay with a generic clenched fist symbol, than I’d be happy to use that too!

If this might come to reality, I think a good idea would be something like a broken fence. From what my teachers taught me libre culture is a political movement which opposes to enclosure, and enclosures began first as a way to take away the common goods of the working class, and then it started to spread across every possible commodity, the difference here is that the good being liberated are generally software.

I’m oversimplifying things but I think y’all get the idea.
