From watching the video it’s not very clear what lie they are disproving…

Anyway, an interesting video, I learned from it is that solar and wind power and battery storage are looking a lot more optimistic than I thought.

Also, self driving taxi/bus is a very dumb idea that also scares me to some degree.

And the sad thing is that any city in the world could get to the level of Copenhagen or even Amsterdam within like five to ten years in terms of bicycle infrastructure. But all attempts of the good people crumble against the ignorant and dumb people in power.

As a person who is actively engaged in a local group of people who advocate for bicycle infrastructure improvement and extension, I can only compare my frustration and desperateness to my attempts to convert people to veganism.

Our mayor is an idiot who doesn’t know shit about bicycle infrastructure, all the people elected to control the city are insanely corrupt and don’t give a shit about people, and it doesn’t help that there are multiple groups of clinical idiots who actively advocate against bicycle infrastructure. It seems that they have absolutely zero knowledge about how urbanism should work.

This is almost an actual quote from a person I tried to talk to in one of those anti-bike groups.

“Oh hey, it’s just this lane, we just need one more lane, pleaseeeee uwu? And this traffic light and pedestrian crossing, let’s remove that from all streets. And please half this sidewalk and increase the speed limit for cars to 150 km/h and it’s going to solve traffic problems forever. Sorry what? This is already a fucking !!!16!!! lane highway with a 130 km/h speed limit that is constantly in traffic jams regardless? naaaah, we just need one more lane, and also please ban bikes and pedestrians and remove half the buildings in the city and make them parking lots, thanks :) uWu”.

An interesting fact from Copenhagen that just completely broke me recently: “Ten years of bike infrastructure investments in Copenhagen cost about the same as a 3 kilometer bypass for cars somewhere on the border of Copenhagen”.

I’m ready to completely give up, I can’t deal with idiots any more, please ship me illegally in a barrel to Amsterdam so that I can spend the rest of my life in there riding a bike and happily terrorizing the car owners that still live in Amsterdam.

yeah, I live in russia, and yes, we do group rides somewhat often to raise awareness, however, imo inflexible and uneducated on the matter politicians present a much greater challenge than the northern climate: as shown by surveys done in cities like copenhagen, most cyclists don’t care about environment, health and safety of other people, the overwhelming majority (63 % of people iirc) cycle because it’s the fastest and most convenient means of transportation

so virtually no shift is going to happen unless the city government is going to start to aggressively roll out cycling infrastructure and penalize and make driving a car more difficult and costly

Yes please I hate cars with a passion and hope that I never have to own one. Sadly here in the USA, especially where I live, cities and suburbs are not people-friendly. Walking anywhere is hell, biking on the streets is practically impossible unless you want to die, and everything is so spread out that even biking isn’t the best option. One day cars will be gone, public transport will rule, and cities will be re-structured with people and the community in mind. I just hope I live to see that day.

Do you feel that way about self-driving cars in general, or just specifically self-driving public transport?

I think that cars are a dumb idea in general, with very few applications, but in those few applications is it going to make sense to use self-driving car. My issue is that people are trying to paint self-driving cars as something that is going to solve the traffic and other transportation problems by using self-driving shareable cars, which is absolutely not the case.

You must have live somewhere with excellent public transportation or with a good enough urban center that you’re able to do all your work and shopping without traveling any significant distance.

i live in a place with okayish public transportation system and with little to no horrible bike infrastructure, however, that doesn’t make the fact that moving people around in cities by car is very inefficient and dumb not true

While I agree that a car in some place like London, New York, or San Francisco is dumb, you’ve changed your goalposts.

Rather than belabor that point, though, what is your preferred alternative?

I might have phrased it wrong, but my answer to your initial question was that I don’t think that self-driving cars in general are dumb, but using self-driving cars for public transportation is dumb.

                what is your preferred alternative?

In theory I would want for all cities for it be the bicycle or personal electric vehicles, especially with the realities of coronavirus, and rail transit (tram for short distances, maybe underground for bigger cities and traditional fast trains for longer distances).

https://lemmy.ml/post/40456 I posted this video since I think it makes the same arguments but in a more elaborate way. I have for years liked this talk by Ramez Naam very much, maybe you will like it too.
