I think that cars are a dumb idea in general, with very few applications, but in those few applications is it going to make sense to use self-driving car. My issue is that people are trying to paint self-driving cars as something that is going to solve the traffic and other transportation problems by using self-driving shareable cars, which is absolutely not the case.

You must have live somewhere with excellent public transportation or with a good enough urban center that you’re able to do all your work and shopping without traveling any significant distance.

i live in a place with okayish public transportation system and with little to no horrible bike infrastructure, however, that doesn’t make the fact that moving people around in cities by car is very inefficient and dumb not true

moving people around in cities by car is very inefficient and dumb

While I agree that a car in some place like London, New York, or San Francisco is dumb, you’ve changed your goalposts.

Rather than belabor that point, though, what is your preferred alternative?

I might have phrased it wrong, but my answer to your initial question was that I don’t think that self-driving cars in general are dumb, but using self-driving cars for public transportation is dumb.

            what is your preferred alternative?

In theory I would want for all cities for it be the bicycle or personal electric vehicles, especially with the realities of coronavirus, and rail transit (tram for short distances, maybe underground for bigger cities and traditional fast trains for longer distances).
