Personally I think not having karma limits is nice currently! I understand why they were used but grinding karma as a lurker on reddit was frustrating.

Are your principles that weak that you can’t even debate them?

Do we really need safe spaces where our ideas aren’t challenged?

One of my gripes with Reddit was that subs became circlejerks where any opposing views got downvoted to oblivion so people just left the sub.

Lemmy may have been made by commies, but the fibre and 5g was built with capitalism.

yes, i would much rather be among people who don’t actively support the pillaging of the global south and the american war machine, i don’t like being among people who treat my identity as a trans woman as something that should be subject to debate over whether i should be allowed to get gender affirming care. I dont want every second of being online to be focused around debate bro liberals asking me to justify my beliefs to them, if they want to learn i’m willing to talk, if they want to try to do an epic own in the free market place of ideas i don’t really care enough to engage that much, except maybe to mock them.

i think the redditor influx to lemmy is a good thing, its created an active space for liberals to be taught some class consciousness by committed communists from lemmygrad and hexbear in a space that is controlled by other open marxist leninists. it doesnt mean i have to like the liberals though.

Mostly agree with your perspective. But also I have some caveats. 🙃

Having spaces where our ideas are challenged is important, but when people have completely different views about a topic, it’s less challenging of ideas and more pointless fighting with neither side learning anything. I’m willing to discuss anything with anyone, but only for a limited amount of time. I don’t want to spend all my time trying to convince other people of the most basic tenets of my beliefs.

So yes, I welcome liberals and communists and even conservatives on this site and we can all debate it out, but its also not crazy to protect spaces where people can have more nuanced discussions with like minded individuals. Luckily I think the federated nature of this site is the perfect solution to provide both. Lemmygrad.ml is still for communists by communists. And most other instances are for everyone by everyone. That’s fine.

Seems like that’s a lost hope points to trans athlete comments above. Mastodon was essentially a leftist space upon creation as well, wasn’t it? I’m new here, but I am hoping that once people catch on to how the fediverse works, they will sort themselves into their “appropriate” instances, or just leave altogether. I do not care about the echo chamber argument, I want my online space to be relatively cozy and not filled with “WeLl AcKtUaLlY” smug centrists.

What is the connection between communism and the transgender movement? Is it as simple as there being significant overlap as marginalized groups fighting against the status quo? The interviews for the Marxist instances pointedly asked how I felt about LGBTQ, and now you’re intimating that discussing Trans athletes is indicative of someone being a liberal as opposed to a leftist. I don’t see how someone’s opinion about Trans athletes has anything to do with their opinion about the optimal socioeconomic structure of society.

Ok. I’m very sympathetic to trans people and it’s good to hear that you’ve found allies in socialist groups. It doesn’t always show because I tend to rant about big concepts and skip right past the simple things. But I don’t hate you and I appreciate your answer to my question.

Trans athlete discourse is an obvious and very tired talking point that is a favorite among transphobes and conservatives. Also I did not mention communism or libs and I’m not interested in engaging in any kind of political discourse without an intersectional lens.

Maybe the Marxist communities trying to filter people out based upon their views on queer and trans people aren’t meant for you.

            That is true.

Maybe the Marxist communities trying to filter people out based upon their views on queer and trans people aren’t meant for you.

            That is also true.

Doesn’t have anything to do with my question though.

Also I did not mention communism or libs and I’m not interested in engaging in any kind of political discourse without an intersectional lens.

You didn’t mention communism or libs, but you did reference leftist spaces and pointedly reject smug centrists.

I’m just a bit miffed by people who claim to be leftists but are actually fighting for their own personal benefit. Marxism is about a collective struggle of all of humanity against capitalism, whereas you seem entirely concerned with your own niche community, and would happily reject and block everyone that you disagree with. By all means, I have no problem with you advocating for queer and trans people. But don’t co-opt leftist spaces for your own ends at the expense of everyone else.

Obviously, I am speaking not just to you, but also to anyone else reading this comment. I wish you luck in maintaining the integrity of your echo chamber going forward, I have no desire to infringe upon your ability to use this platform, and I believe we can coexist.

You seem to be making a lot of broad generalizations about who I am and what I meant by my original post and I’m not in the business of trying to defend myself or engage in the exact type of conversation I said that I was bored of. I hope you feel it was a good use of your time

You’re not in the business of engaging with anyone who challenges or disagrees with you about anything at all. And that’s fine, you can return to your happy place. I don’t want to ruin your day, I just disagree with you about some things. Mainly that I am okay with all different types of people coming onto this platform and talking to them and sometimes arguing with them. They exist in the real world, we all have to deal with them in some way. I prefer facing it head on instead of hiding from it.

But my bad for being rude, I guess I’m kinda irritated about this whole topic and I took it out on you.

Thanks for the apology. I can and will engage with people who disagree with me on things, but there are some lines that I won’t cross for my own sanity and there is nothing wrong with that, just as you can engage in whatever discourse you’d like with the other hundreds and thousands of people who are willing. I generally prefer to save my energy for difficult conversations with people in real life, but even online I’ll engage in them too. The unfortunate part is that 95 percent of the time people don’t engage in good faith and that’s frustrating as hell so I don’t try anymore.

Fully understood and I appreciate the response. You do you, as I said earlier we can totally coexist.

It’s nice when people don’t just run away from contentious discussions, but actually finish them. I feel like reddit arguments always just get more and more toxic, but in this environment people aren’t as anonymous and it feels more like talking to a real person. I’m glad you continued to engage and we could reach an understanding because I came in kinda hot 😅

for many trans people our existence has recently come under fire very rapidly within the last few basically out of nowhere, communists are basically the only group that will, for the most part, uncritically fight for our rights and defend us. Basically the almost complete inaction of liberal parties that claim to be a bulwark against fascism have radicalised many of my fellow trans people into searching for an alternative to liberal “democracy” that will actually protect our rights - hence most trans people are some flavour of anarchist or marxist leninist adjacent nowadays.

I’ve literally never met a single none socialist trans person irl, and i’ve only ever experienced two none socialist trans women online (both of them were just so incredibly racist that they were supporting trump anyway despite the threat to their own existence)
