The weird thing is that customers don’t even care. It’s more like the managers telling the cashiers how they think customers are.

In my experience it’s more common that service workers are not allowed to sit, it’s seen as unprofessional. I briefly worked for Walmart, and one of our cashiers was fired for sitting on the job even though she was like 8mo pregnant. As ice cold as that was, it probably worked out better for her because she wasn’t going to be given any maternity leave, so unemployment benefits would at least allow her to take time off work to spend with her baby.

Yeah well saying no cashiers in the entire country are allowed to sit is just false. Yes Walmart fucking suck, everyone knows that.

It’s not just Walmart, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cashier sitting in any chain store. Food service & retail workers pretty much never get to sit on the job. If we’re talking about any big-box retailer the cashiers are never sitting. I looked up some photos of cashiers sitting, and they feel noticeably off. Maybe other parts of the country are different, but at first glance I’d probably assume a cashier sitting down is in a wheel chair, it’s definitely not normal.

That said, I think it’s silly and cruel. It’s not something I often think about anymore because I don’t work retail, but now I’m gonna be looking for any cashiers sitting down the next time I go out lol.

You point to a European company famed for their good labor practices?

I’ve worked a fair bit of retail, and was not allowed to sit.

Hell, I’ve worked as a helpdesk manager in organizations where I was not supposed to sit for more than 1 hour a day.

Canadian here, none of the cashiers in any of the big stores are allowed to sit. At least I’ve never seen any of them sitting nor do they ever have chairs at their stations. No one here questions that even though they probably should. Some in smaller mom and pop stores do sit, but that’s a very small fraction of cashiers, and often it’s the actual owner of the store who’d the cashier in that case.
