Democracy is when a homeless man has free speech rights to yell that he is cold and hungry, but nobody listens to him. It’s when black people can protest and say racism is bad, but cops still shoot them. Liberals, especially the privileged ones, employ this bullshit to try and placate the marginalized and maintain the status quo. Hey you can yell about how much shit sucks at least.

Other political parties are legal in Cuba. What’s not legal is to be a political party based abroad, or to receive funding from abroad.

It’s certainly true that communist party has special status in Cuba, compared to other parties. That’s quite common in communist countries, where the model is that the country is subordinate to the party. People who prefer a model where the party is subordinate to the country don’t like that very much, but it’s not obviously bad - just different.

You could even argue that it’s a very sensible tweak to make if your ultimate goal is world communism, since it gives you leeway to dissolve the country later. With the other model, that gets tricky fast - advocating for it in Germany is a crime, for instance.

It’s almost like people living in communism actually vote for the communist party because they like what they’re doing!

Parties in liberal democracies are private, ie, separate from the state. When the Democratic party rigged the 2016 primary they openly admitted to it and argued it was their right as a private party. The US government is supposed to follow certain ethical rules and have a certain openness, but the two parties which control the government aren’t bound by those rules.

I wouldn’t say the government is subordinate to the party or vice versa. The government is nothing but a tool and a weapon in the hands of those who wield it. It isn’t capable of subordinating any more than a shovel is, though those who are employed by either might think differently. The difference is that in a socialist state the communist party is integrated into the government. There are no backroom conspiracies dedicated to subverting the law. It’s not a two-faced mafia sort of political system with a public and private position.

    • Those building colors are actually oppression towards the colorblind people, in Cuba it’s bad to be colorblind and the government will kill you for it they call them there “repollo” and you get executed for being one, as castro once said “el repollo sabe bien en ensalada mmm” in which he basically calls killing of colorblind people as delicious (notice the mmm)

Im just gonna put it out there and say it.

Westerners think socialist countries arent democratic because they cant fathom that a political party can have a serious winning streak.

Remind these buffoons that if it wasnt for the opposition in the US managing to put in places term limits; FDR probably would have remained president until he fuckin died.

Because why the FUCK would anyone vote for another party if the one in power is actually doing just about everything you want them to do?

The people telling us that socialism isnt democratic cant even turn the internet into a public utility. They cant even get 20k student debt forgiven. Fools. All of them.

    • they cant fathom that a political party can have a serious winning streak.

That is especially vexing because it does happen very often in liberal democracies. And even where the system is designed to change parties every term or two like in USA, political parties might change but the policies remain unchanged, so how does that even differ from one party systems?

      • Got no argument from me. If liberals cared to check at all, they would pay attention to the meat and potatoes policies that all their political parties seem to agree on and really figure out if those policies work for them or against them.

The USA has two parties now and even a bunch of indie parties like China and Cuba. And each vote either party is functionally the sane god damn thing.

The Athenians had a really important rule called Ostracism. Basically whenever a politician would become too powerful, would become corrupt, or would be deemed as someone undermining the state, they could be voted into exile for 10 years (and thus banned from legal or indirect political participation for 10 years). Say what you will about Athens having slavery while also preaching democracy, but this rule was essential in keeping the Athenian democracy safe for centuries.

So, my dear random Westoids, democracy isn’t about fascists, reactionaries and rich assholes being able to freely spew their bullshit.

Except athenian democracy was not safe, just as most city states it had many coups and had periods of monarchy and oligarchy too. And commonly considered greatest period of democracy was when politics there was completely dominated by Pericles and his faction.

"It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed person, who goes about hungry, and cannot find employment.

Real liberty can exist only where exploitation has been abolished, where there is no oppression of some by others, where there is no unemployment and poverty, where a man is not haunted by the fear of being tomorrow deprived of work, of home and of bread. Only in such a society is real, and not paper, personal and every other liberty possible."

It’s not a democracy according to some freaking tool on the web? Right, sorry. Everyone on earth forgot that you were an expert and didn’t ask for your opinion when coming to a conclusion on democracy… sorry bro, my bad.

Will somebody please think about the oppression of private property. These Cubans aren’t allowing capital to have their fair amount of speech. The true pillar of liberal democracy is Citizens United. Would you be against unity? How many simple farmers and businessmen lost their lands thanks to Fidel and his ruthless gang of rabble rousing peasant farmers and proletarians? Their place was to be united under the paternalism and democracy of the bourgeoisie.
