Can’t say I’m too thrilled with this mindset. They’re new, but they already want to do a server, and they can’t afford the server that they already decided to start paying for, and the first thing they want is for the entire Mastodon project to be turned inside out to support ads and paid boosting. If I didn’t know better I would say it’s a troll post, but I suppose I don’t doubt that there are really people like this out there.

Their ideas are nonsensical (adverts, paid boosting, both are practially the same thing and one of the things people come to mastodon to avoid) but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to come up with a financial model for an instance. A non-profit cooperative which charges for membership would be a good example of a way to responsibly and transparently fund an instance

        Doesn’t social.coop do it this way ?

There are also some instances that paid like that capitalist.party or something.

You’ve got PeerTube instances that limit the upload with the possibility of getting more for money.

Yep, social.coop is an example. And paying for things once you are using them reasonably heavily is fair game, as long as all costs are made clear at the start and there are lots of alternatives, which is something decentralised platforms benefit from. This is in contrast to pay-to-win or hidden freemium costs.

Frankly, I don’t think the idea is to make money with the fediverse. However the idea of balancing your costs is good for longevity of your instance. You can try opening a liberapay, opencollective (etc.) for donations. You can also try offering more for money, for Mastodon maybe those custom emojies ? I don’t know. Or the original WhatsApp model where you get a year free and then have to pay a dollar per year.

I think the lack of ads/paid boosts or something is probably why people join mastodon. I guess if you really want to go that way you could offer to make all new accounts follow someone’s account.

Dude you are in the wrong forum asking about that. Try the libertarian or capitalist one.

Can’t you make a server with raspeberry pi? You can eventually delete some content.
