Super interesting how this thread is much more active than the one on the Reddit. That’s cool!

Long ago, in 2020 I used to be big on Anti Lockdown stuff and COVID being a conspiracy bandwagon, but then I woke up when I realized that every prediction that crowd had was wrong. All they got right was shit you could see coming from a mile away like inflation or another variant getting popular in the news. I think the worst part is how they think vaccines are voodoo magic that make your blood “impure” which kinda speaks to the Nazi bullshit those guys always try to peddle. Basically I turned into a conservative for a year, and I hated it. I’m happy I found you guys, since the things you talk about are actually provable without mental gymnastics.

    • Glad to have you back, I agree with everything you said, I feel like this as well.

I have two antivax parents, and I believed until like 2016. They have a bookshelf full of David Icke and more crazy. It took me a year to sort out my politics, and reading theory finalized this process.

Atleast, they drilled anti-imperialism and doubting the government into me from a young age (their twisted version, but I was able to fix it later, and it greatly helped with transition to Marxism. For this I am grateful). Once I decoupled from their propaganda I quickly realized it was all made up, and fixed my media intake. The Internet can do both a lot of good, and a lot of bad.

Let’s just say my respect for the Great Firewall and Stasi increases by the day…

Let’s of MLs are people that flirted with conspiracism before realizing that we’re a class-based society rather than an “Illuminati”-based society (not that you believed in that, but the “one central organization” generally goes along with these conspiracies).

  • Hello all, how are you doing? I’ve found myself using Reddit progressively less and less, since it’s getting completely infested with Ukraine war garbage, on almost every sub. Even subs like Qult Headquarters, which I used to browse frequently, and which I thought would have been better prepared to identify the same cult-like behaviour, has been overrun by idiots blaming everything on Russia. I’m disapppinted, but I can’t say I’m surprised…

Same, friend. Reddit is almost unusable now for me outside a couple of very niche interest subs. It’s a blatant psyop and they’re not even subtle about it. People have lost their goddamn minds. Made the mistake of looking at /all today and saw some giant thread about how Russia doesn’t even have modern toilets and how Russian soldiers were stealing light bulbs because they are considered such advanced technology. So sick of this dehumanizing bullshit.

And where the hell did this current narrative of Russians being a child rape culture come from?!

And where the hell did this current narrative of Russians being a child rape culture come from?!

Same place as the stories of not having asphalt roads and lightbulbs: the pretentious butts of the people writing it. And it is nothing new, certainly not in the media. Back in 2016 I used to frequent r/Europe. One of the most often repeated talking points in regards to Russia was “They only respect power and force, you can’t do diplomacy with them, they see it as a weakness!”.

Is the US really responsible for what’s happening in Pakistan right now?

From my understanding, which admittedly is probably inadequate, is that there is a mix of domestic fuckery with the military apparatus and mistakes made my Khan and his party plus the US government pushing things along as they always do.

I think the US government is probably majority at fault but not entirely. Please correct me if you understand the subject better.

    Few unrelated questions:

Does anyone know of any decent podcasts that are Marxist/socialist and discuss things from a religious perspective?

Do we have any non-western world news websites that can be suggested, I need something that stays up to date with the news around the world, , it doesn’t have to be specifically leftist in branding, I need something that’s a bit more broad than cgtn and China Daily but less fucking awful than Al Jazeera and RT, maybe rt is the best I’ll get, who knows?

Does anyone have any suggestions for non-western Marxist psychologists and psychological theory?

I’m not expecting one person to know this, but just some general topics I’d like to engage in.

If you’re looking for a Christian perspective podcast, there’s Faith and Capital. I’ve only listened to a couple episodes myself, but I liked it well enough. I think the creators are Maoists though, so bear that in mind.

Thanks, I actually started listening to them like a week ago, and the guy seems great with his reading and such, but damn was he shoving Maoism as the only true form of socialist theory down the listeners throat, like I’m really partial to Mao and his ideas but Jesus christ calm down

    • I don’t remember any explicitly religious podcasts that discuss these things that are Marxist, but I do know revleftradio has a couple episodes linking these things together a bit.

Also can’t recommend The Deprogram enough generally, fuckin amazing podcast. Also the Magnus archives but that has nothing to do with what you asked, I just like it!

      For podcasts:

(Edit 2: I reread your comment again and thought you meant podcasts in general. I don’t know any religious ones in particular, sorry)

-The Socialist Program with Brian Becker (Edit: forgot to mention this, he’s got an interview with comrade Chris Smalls coming up)

-Turn Leftist Podcast -Invent the Future -The Deprogram

-If you speak Italian, comrade Alessandro Barbero (a historian who has become a meme due to great popularity, with expertise in Medieval history) has a podcast

I would gladly take more recommendations

Media (they don’t all cover all the things, but you can get a global perspective by reading all of them)

-The Grayzone -Telesur -Kawsachun News -Redfish -Popular Front? (Ansrchist cringe politics, but still mostly good content and reporting) -Monthly Review -In Defense of Communism -The Empire Files -PressTV (Iran) -KCNA/DPRKToday -Democracy Now -Liberation News (PSL) -People’s World (CPUSA) -dangcongsan.vn (CPV website) and vietnamnews.vn -Labor Notes

These are all I can remember but there’s more. I opened Spotify to check and I got not one, but TWO mcdonalds ads… got a slight feeling £’ll get the cracked version soon…

      Three mcdonalds ads… fuck this…

Unfortunately Mr barbero also described Stalin as a dictator 1984 vuvuzela

        • Yes, I know this, but the rest of his work is very good. Maybe, with a different political situation and access to relevant material, his position could change. Currently it would mean career suicide for him to say anything else, so it’s not like he has a choice anyway. Not everyone is perfect, unfortunately.

my headcanon is that he is a based ML and hes lurking this lemmy.

            • I think he is clearly hiding his power level lmao. Not sure if ML but he’s obviously a communist and always cites Marxist perspectives on history in his lectures. So yeah, pretty based.

He once got into a debate with members of Rizzo’s party (including Rizzo himself) when he was invited on their livestream and basically agreed on everything except Stalin, if I remember correctly.

Seeing the past party drama the PC has gone through, Rizzo basically leading the party alone and silencing any dissent, and the direction that the PC is taking currently, now allying openly with Sgarbi, Paragone and other various reactionaries and anti vaxxers, I could see that them being the only (major) openly Stalinist force could have turned him off in these past few years.

Partito Comunista? More like Partito Boomerista. Unfortunately its the only party that takes votes :(

                • I hope Rizzo gets purged or dies soon since every passing day, through his actions, he tarnishes the image of not only Marxism-Leninism, but all the actual communists who are doing good work in this country, both inside and outside his party. He’s basically a nazbol nowadays, which is a shame, since he’s poisoning the minds of all his militants. Even his own fucking youth wing broke with the Party (due to factional struggles and rivalry between its leader and Rizzo, but still)…

    Comrades and Friends.

    I have a rant.

I can no longer listen to a huge portion of the music I used to enjoy. I have reached the point where the hyperindividualism of Western culture is repulsive.

    For example:

    1. The Who. Holy shit could Pete Townshend be any further up his own arsehole. Everything is an examination of his own inner life and/or a treatise on the nature of fame.

    2. Peter Gabriel. There is only so much navel-gazing I can stand. Cannot get through an entire album anymore.

    3. Pink Floyd. I thought this one was safe. Turned off Peter Gabriel the other day and put on Animals. Went to read the news and saw Pink Floyd’s new song in support of the Ukraine. Turned off Animals. Roger Waters, no longer with Pink Floyd, is reasonably cool as far as Westerners go, but his Ukraine take was ridiculous: Putin is a criminal blah blah America is also bad blah blah no mention of Russia’s security concerns or the ACTUAL GODDAMN NAZIS WTF ROGER.

    just

    fuck

I’m down to two albums of the Red Army Choir, and Norse shamanistic music from Wardruna and Heilung (yes I am a Marxist-Leninist Norse mythology enjoyer, fuck these Nazis appropriating our culture. Odin is called All-Father because he is the father of ALL OF US you dipshits. What part of “remember that we all are brothers” is so confusing?!).

    ugh

    um

So does anyone know where I can download Soviet music? Archive has a lot but it all comes in like one single file for 2+ hours of songs. Would really like to just put on “Слава Сталину” whenever the mood strikes.

Maybe I should just copy the songs from Youtube. Not like there’s some hi-fi version out there.

Like 99% of modern music is going to have capitalist or capitalist realist messaging. It’s just something you have to live with if you want to enjoy life. But this is why I tend to stick around hip hop and punk. Punk historically had a huge anarchist/anti-state influence before it got recuperated by the middle class, and you can still find ACAB takes or Punch a Nazi songs on some recent albums. Hip Hop comes directly from people disaffected by capitalism so you’ll find at least some artists who are explicitly against the system they were born into (even if those songs don’t sell as well anymore, there are artists who specialize in voicing cultural frustration with society).

Something else to bear in mind: there is a demographic of smalltime local artists without money with a tendency to be more vocally anticapitalist, and it prevents them from landing bigger gigs, so they rely entirely on people watching live music or buying from their bandcamp. It would require lemmy users to be nice and nonjudgemental of anarchist and anarchist-adjacent people, though. Very few artists are explicitly marxist.

I’m actually a huge fan of The Coup: Boots Riley is a comrade with a great sense of rhythm. I’m going through a phase where I’m tired of hearing “fuck” every three words, however, so they’re on pause. (Boots did get MUCH better at this on their last album, Sorry to Bother You, but that was released 10 years ago.)

You know, I think I just need to put on some Chumbawamba and call it a day.

Not sure if you’re into it but instrumental music doesn’t carry semantic meaning like songs etc do, so you can just enjoy the abstract musical aspect and ignore the artists’ shitty takes. Like the other commenter said, for artists success is contingent on not pissing off the people who control the money.

In his 2019 release Hringrás, Danheim recorded the last three minutes of a track using only parts of dead plants and animals, as well as some real human bones.

One of my friends joined a political party in my home town. It’s a neolib right wing party and in the local elections they came second. He made it to the council. The largest party, a left wing green party, now forms a majority with almost every left wing party in the city, blocking the right wing parties from joining the coalition lmao. Needless to say, they are mad.

  • Man, it’s not really on topic but the mass shooting on the subway in Brooklyn today has got me bummed. I know it’s only a matter of time before the violence finds its way to the imperial core, but I don’t want to live with this shit either (I’m in NYC). And there’s a distinct possibility it was a targeted hate crime against Asians because of where it happened, which is just the cold war 2.0 stochastic violence rearing its head if that turns out to be the reason behind it.

I’m normally pretty good at not letting shit get to me because I’m already so pessimistic and sour, but it’s not working great today.

Don’t wanna be too cynical, but is this stuff even that out of the ordinary in the US? Looking in from over the pond, this just seems like another Tuesday there

      • In the US? No. In NYC, on the subway, in the middle of the day? Very out of the ordinary. Also the whole gas mask/smoke grenade thing kinda sets it apart

Makes sense, the US being such a large place tends to get lost by just reading the news, giving the impression this kind of thing happens everywhere all the time. Agree about the gas mask and grenade thing, makes it seem more than just a random shooting. Also some bombs didn’t go off I heard?

          Anyway, stay safe comrade.
