All I know is that there’s one Reddit admin cheating on r/Place, by rapidly putting pixels on top of other’s drawing with no cooldown, unlike every other r/Place participants. If it’s about them censoring something, I don’t really know. This one Reddit admins is previously also known for banning shitpost sub r/2balkan4you. But I don’t really follow r/2balkan4you either.

If there’s something else going on in r/Place, I don’t really know.

I hear this type of thinking all the time. “COMMERCIAL PRODUCT has made an unpopular decision now users will flock to LIBRE PRODUCT” It usually only produces a small dent in marketshare that slowly comes back to the commercial product. If one’s been with Reddit this long, almost always the annoyance of everything being different at Lemmy is greater than the annoyance with whatever decision.

People love to be temporarily outraged and especially love to enable others to be outraged on their behalf, if you make authority the target then it becomes a dogpile. Same powerful feeling with half the effort. Outsource your outrage today!

Also if you ask me, r/place is all about humans working together to create and all the politics that come along with such an endeavor. The creations are awesome but the politics, discussion and reasonings that happen to take us to that point are the REAL entertainment. If this is what will happen every year then I’m here for it, let’s kick back and watch the fireworks.

The thing that finally got me to stop using Reddit is most of the functionality of the site stopped working because it required esoteric and bleeding edge javascript for no good reason whatsoever.

I don’t even understand how this r/place thing works. I only know each user can paint a pixel every 20 mins. I didn’t even know a forums web application could be used for pixelart. If that’s actually a feature that Reddit itself provides, I don’t expect anyone coming to Lemmy for whichever controversy could happen, because Lemmy is not going to implement such feature any time soon so coming to Lemmy is not going to solve hypothetical immigrants anything related to this pixelart movement. If that’s actually a feature that Reddit itself provides.

So I don’t expect it to grow specifically because of this. If Lemmy grows (out of Reddit), it is because of more general problems Reddit might have, imo. But I don’t know, I’m on lemmy just because of “Fuck proprietary software” mentality, and less about controversies, so I might not be qualified to answer you.

I don’t expect that alone to grow this place. It may trigger a small exodus but no, not much. The removal of “left-wing” subreddits is what grew this place a lot recently, maybe also with the recuperation of formerly anti-capitalism communities like /r/antiwork, but that’s not sustainable.

What we need is an actual community with original, valuable things. Being merely a clone (or a clone without ads and capitalist investment funding) isn’t a path to success. Federation doesn’t mean much to the typical web user. We need to have a culture actually worth something beyond “not reddit”, something creative or actually achieving something.

Popularity is a weird thing and can happen unexpectedly. You’d be surprised how often an internet-celebrity shout-out can attract thousands.

The hard part is retaining users from a spike in interest, we need to have actual value to whoever arrives, like original communities, quality discussion or an attractive culture. Easier said than done, but in a rather civil place like this it should be possible.

They’ll forget about it a month after Place ends and go back to blindly hating TikTok while reposting videos from it.
