There’s a client being worked on that wants to incorporate those sorts of features, also there’s a Matrix Spec Change (MSC) that’s being worked on to make “groups as rooms.” MSC1722. Fairly sure the person working on the client is also involved with that MSC.
Most of the people I chat with are using Discord, and they’re not really into tech. Discord is easy for them. I’ve been wanting to set up a Matrix / Element / Jitsi server, but from using Element, I’m not sure how easy it’s going to be get people to switch.
I think the main thing is the structure of single rooms compared to Discord’s channels. I’ll definitely look into the community tab.
I was actually also looking into rocket.chat. That looks a little more what I’m after in terms of interface.

Having groups of rooms that have shared privileges, and not just rooms would be a killer feature.
