    It doesn’t feel like a great idea to conscript those with mental health issues heavily impacted by stress.

        True. I always read conscription and think “sent to the frontlines”, but there’s a lot of logistics and support that goes into an army.

          My dad got drafted during Vietnam, and landed himself a position doing some supply/logistics stuff and basically spent his whole time chilling in Kentucky doing warehouse and office stuff. Admittedly he also did his damnedest on every aptitude test, evaluation, etc. they gave him to make himself out to be a coward and play up any non-combat skills he had specifically trying to end up doing something like that.

          There’s of course a lot of differences between 'Nam and Ukraine, but at the end of the day every army throughout history has relied on a whole bunch of people who weren’t on the front lines to make things work. You need a whole lot of mechanics, warehouse workers, pencil pushers, IT staff, cooks, medical staff, truck drivers, etc. and if you’re able to use people who wouldn’t be able to hack it physically/mentally/emotionally on the front lines to fill those roles, it’s kind of a no-brainer so that soldiers who are able to do it aren’t tied up behind the scenes when they’re needed.

          Of course it absolutely sucks for anyone who gets conscripted.

            Somewhat similar to what happened to my grandpa. Technically wasn’t drafted, he had buddy in the draft office gave him a heads up that’d it’d be a very good idea for him to enlist soon. He ended up as a supply officer in Okinawa and got to take my grandma with him. Good thing too (and largely why it happened), the man’s eyesight is/was awful. He would’ve almost certainly been a dead man had he ever lost his glasses in combat

        Look at the list and stop talking out your ass. Wars are won due to logistics, lots of paperwork and so on. Granted, the situation could be better, but let’s not pretend Ukraine has its back against a wall.

        They are still kicking Russia like nothing before.

        Also, they are not just accepting any mental disorder, there are many disorders that may prevent someone to be in the front, but they don’t prevent one to carry supplies from A-B in the back country. Wars are not just won through fights on the front.

              I would rather die than kill. If you tell me to kill I will kill you first to limit the amount of total death.

                  Believe it or not, this would completely cripple military power across the board. Overall, resulting in less death than the death of the white collar pencil pushers that command troops.

      Ukraine:

      • closed border for all males;
      • non-stop involuntary draft of unwilling citizens;
      • resorts to conscripting HIV positives and people with mental health issues.

      Russia:

      • first wave of forced mobilization ended half year ago, second wave still not started;
      • still has open border for most citizens (which actually helped a lot of them to avoid first wave of mobilization).

      In alternative reality created by western massmedia this definately means that Russia is short of manpower. In world of logical thinking this actually means something else.

            HOLY FUCK y’all so stupid.

            let me explain it for you, c’mon hold my hand.

            If your country is being invaded every single person is part of the war effort. Every one. Even if you just cut grass or worked at costco, because you are being invaded and under threat of war. You’re part of a war effort. Remanaging your resources like manpower to more war adjacent positions makes complete sense. All hands on deck, we are invaded.

            If you are invading and must conscript fighters, your invasion is a meat grinder not going well.

            Russia was supposed to end this war long ago, in their minds. At this point it is a sunk cost and they HAVE to win or they severely lose on a play they made.

            So no. Not the same. Russia is doing terrible.

Actually you’ve just written WHY Ukraine is more desperate for manpower than Russia (“every single person is part of war effort and so on”). So you yourself proved your initial position to be wrong, but you were too lame to grasp that. And about “we are invaded”: the only war that you personally wage is war in lemmy comments against facts, logics and critical thinking. Don’t try to cover your own nullity with other’s casualities.

So there’s no point to argue, really trafficing more mercs = more desperate. From the third attempt you finally managed to bring something like valid argument, sadly it clearly works against you and once again shows that you’re bot without any logical thinking.

      Ukraine was invaded by a tyrant. The people have suffered for over a year, children have been slaughtered or lost limbs, civilians entombed in rubble, and the armed forces have lost tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands defending their homeland.

          I don’t get why some think that the US or Ukraine started the war. They did not. Russia started it. Why would any country attack another country 28 times its size?

            Why do you think Russia started it? The Obama government supported the Nazi led coup that overthrew Ukraine’s democracy. Then the war started because the ethnic minority saw what was coming for them.

              Also, the US seemed very horny to sell overpriced gas to Europe and dump their dept on Ukraine and EU to fix their inflation. As a side effect they get to use more tax money to modernize their military stocks by moving additional taxmoney to their military industry.

          “Orwellian” is a term that gets thrown around a lot these days so one hesitates to use it, but when a country invades another sovereign state and then turns round and claims they didn’t start the war it really does sound like something the ministry of truth would say. To be clear. America started the war in Iraq (incidentally I marched in the street in protest). Russia started the war in Ukraine.

            But as I already informed, Ukraine was not a “sovereign state”, it was at that point a Nazi led puppet state of the USA. They hamd picked its government and when it was refused in parliament they ignored the result of the vote and put their guy in anyway. “Yats the guy, fuck the EU.”

            That was the start of the war. The USA started it. This is historical fact that you’ll have to learn to accept.

            To be clear. America started the war in Iraq

            The unprovoked invasion of Iraq. Every notice how that was never what they called it? Why do you think that is?

              We can debate questions of historical sovereignty all night … it will never end. But do you think the majority of Ukrainians would prefer to be part of Russia? If so you are either lying or you live on a different planet. Like the Poles, the Romanians, the Lithuanians, the Czechs, in fact anyone who has lived under the Soviet / Russian boot, Ukrainians for the most part detest and despise Russia (with good reason). The most ardent anti-Russians are the ones who used to be ruled by them.

                No of course not. Do you think the majority of the breakaway republics and Crimea want to be part of fascist Ukraine?

                the Lithuanians, the Czechs, in fact anyone who has lived under the Soviet / Russian boot

                This is a big tell that you’ve been programmed. People lived well in the USSR. You should educate yourself on this.

                Ukrainians for the most part detest and despise Russia (with good reason).

                This is a very recent development from America’s propagandising and funding of a Nazi extremism that’s taken over the country. The people have fallen for the propaganda, as you have.

                Do you think people should have the right to self determination?

      Maybe they just want to get rid of them. The west seems to mind Nazis a lot less than losers.

    Background: On 30 August, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at a meeting of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, it had been decided that a comprehensive inspection be conducted of the validity of decisions made by military medical commissions since 24 February 2022. These are decisions on disability and unfitness for service that were or may be related to corruption violations. All cases where the decisions were unreasonable and illegal should be investigated by law enforcement agencies, the president said. In addition, Zelenskyy announced that the system of determining fitness for military service must be reassessed to make it easier for commanders to recruit soldiers for combat missions and to prevent the concept of limited fitness from being manipulated.
