There is a lot of value to be had in video content. One problem with Marxist books as that they are pretty difficult to actually break down and understand, and part of being a working class person is that not a lot of people have time to read nor were provided the education necessary to fully grasp it on our own.

Also a lot of people, including me for the longest time, live out in bumfuck nowhere and don’t have comrades to explain things nor parties to engage in readings with.

Video explanations of Marxist theory on easy to use platforms are vital to a revolution, and if we don’t occupy that space, fascists will/are.

        • THIS. this. Working people for almost 200 years have been reading theory & putting it into practice. It is naive to think that books are somehow the enemy of class consciousness. If you can’t read theory, that’s fine there are plenty of audio versions, hell there’s even comics.

I think left tube can be a jumping off point, but you shouldn’t stop there. A first hand source will always be more enriching.

Even if we gained better working conditions for workers which allowed for more time to read, and somehow got public school quality to not be so shit, different people learn by different methods, and there are also some people who might not be so able bodied as to be able to read.

There needs to be multiple mediums through which theory can be learned, for those who learn best by watching, for those who learn best by listening, tactile learners, etc simply handing them a copy of Capital and saying “have at it” isn’t the best approach. Not to mention for those with disabilities like blindness or dyslexia…

I am not saying we shouldn’t have or use books, but books cannot be our only education resource. As of now, having the time and creative freedom necessary to sit down and analyze a book like Capital is a luxury, and until we find a way to get working hours reduced and reduce the physical and mental demands of work on workers so they aren’t so exhausted by the end of the day that all they want to do is sleep, we need to increase the accessibility of Marxism. That means making videos and podcasts and engaging in communty outreach and providing hands on opportunities through direct action and various solidarity networks, hell even if we need to gamify concepts of Marxism so more people can learn then I’m down.

We need to attack this fucker called Capitalism from every angle available to us. We need to use the modern tools at our disposal.

now, none of these youtubers content is overall bad in fact most are very good when it comes to certain topics or certain aspects of the debate (altright pipeline) , but they all have a few critical errors in their thinking based on not learning the history of what happened betweeen 1945 and 2001. or better yet: where this current timeline went astray

i mean any marxist critique of our system wouldn’t start at problems of intersectionality as useful as they may be, but it would focus on hard economics. and since the largest market on this planet with the largest cash flow by far is THE DRUG TRADE, not talking about its history and interwoven connection with the imperial system of oppression and manipulation is outright obfuscation of reality. can’t attack the system without attacking prohibition, it’s players and their history of corruption

I don’t generally enjoy his channel all that much but Shaun’s video “droppign the bomb” is very good, it’s a 2 hour long history lesson about the whole context behind the dropping of the atom bombs, very very thorough and interesting.

How is Noah? I have a couple videos of his saved in my queue but haven’t watched. I don’t know most of these YouTubers. Shaun seems ok on Twitter. Sometimes Hasan has some good tweets (always like seeing someone ratio Ben Shapiro), but seems clueless.

I assume most of these people are just uninformed western leftists who sometimes have decent takes? Way too many good ML voices out there to waste my time on people that aren’t up to par.

      My opinion:

Noah was cringey to me but it depends on taste.

Shaun makes very very VERY good, extremely well researched videos…for a socdem/demsoc. I wouldn’t trust him for example with modern geopolitics or AES, but for example is video on the Hiroshima nukes was excellent and only made me wince mildly once or twice regarding Stalin. He’s not a rabid “anti tankie” though I’m sure he would call Stalin an “authoritarian dictator” or something.

I never cared much for Hasan’s content or style, not for me, but he fills a good niche (ditzy himbo casual streamer) and honestly he (intentionally or not) overlaps with MLs a lot more than we, he, his audience or the anti-communists give him credit for. I would much rather some Zoomer/Alpha be watching him than any other big name political streamer, that’s for sure. He is indeed a little uneducated, like I said “casual,” but that’s kind of part of his niche, I’m fine with him as an entry into radicalization. He softened up a few people to recieve my ML takes and things of deeper substance.

Other than those people, of the people I recognize: Contra is a dead end socdem but (was, as a newbie to politics) mildly entertaining, ditto for Hbomb and Philosophy Tube, especially when they aren’t talking about things that are important. Three Arrows is like Shaun but very painfully anticommunist. I recognize the white guy with black curly hair in the middle and the black girl on the bottom left but can’t remember much beyond the former made several things about movies and the latter self identified as a liberal who was “trying to learn” (assumedly about anarchism or anticommunist socialism). And of course we all know about Glorious Child Enjoyer Vaush.

Yeah, I used to watch a lot of Breadtube from about 2016-2018 in lieu of TV or movies. I’d queue up one of their bloated video essays with lunch and feel like I was getting more educated. I guess for where I was at the time, I was. I’m just happy I outgrew them and didn’t get sucked into dead-end anticommunist leftism.

Curly hair guy is Big Joel. The channel is mostly about examining the ideologies (of the creators) expressed by different things from poems to movies to PragerU. I haven’t seen all of his videos, but I don’t think he’s expressed anti-comm views, nor has he dive into economics much. It’s mostly a philosophy/literature channel.

I admire her effort but she has an unhealthy relationship with her audience that pairs very poorly with her mental illness(es), and IMO her videos sometimes come off as “read 1-3 of the first results from Google” and not super high effort. I respect her and her path but as of now I would hesitate to recommend much of her content to people, maybe in a few years (disclaimer: the last video I saw from her was at least a year ago so idk if she has changed since then). Though for what it was where I was in my radicalization it filled a niche well enough.
