Hi all, I’m the LibreWolf windows dev:)
This recent video seems mostly about not wanting to use ddg due to the current political climate…
Welcome to the official community for LibreWolf.
LibreWolf is designed to increase protection against tracking and fingerprinting techniques, while also including a few security improvements. LibreWolf also aims to remove all the telemetry, data collection and annoyances, as well as disabling anti-freedom features like DRM. If you have any question please visit our FAQ first: https://librewolf.net/docs/faq/
To learn more or to download the browser visit the website: https://librewolf.net/
If you want to contribute head over to our Gitlab: https://gitlab.com/librewolf-community/browser
I don’t talk about LibreWolf either, but I use it :-))
Librewolf is a great firefox fork. I like it.
Just one nitpick: I can’t get it to remember the last download directory.
have a look here -> https://librewolf.net/docs/faq/#can-i-set-a-default-download-directory
Thanks, I’ll take a look. I’m looking to default to “directory of the last download” until I close the browser, which doesn’t seem to be possible.
I think that’s not possible, sorry!
Hello and welcome. It is nice to see you all from LibreWolf team coming here. I hope you enjoy Lemmy. Have fun.
Hi opalraava! Thx for your work
Is that a question?
I really wonder why you shared his video? How did you even get to see that video?
I laughed at the malware part. This makes me question the entire Librewolf project. If opinions are formed based on random YouTube creators, how can we trust any decision made on Librewolf?
Edit: clarification on how the search engine was selected was provided by @firstname.lastname@example.org.
I watched the video now, and while I get that the stuff said in it doesn’t make sense I fail to understand what made you assume that we form opinions based on youtube videos. if you want to know how you can trust the decisions check gitlab and see how everything is documented and researched properly.
The reply below from @email@example.com, combined with sharing this video, is what makes it sound like opinions are formed from YouTube videos.
Meaning, a bit of information isn’t complete crap, if you hear it often from YouTubers.
well I’m not asking that you take my words for it:
I also don’t agree with the above video (and feel free to discuss in here why you also don’t), but don’t question the level of research without first checking.
The purpose of this thread was to check what the situation is, but it remained unclear even after multiple questions from @firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is certainly a better representation of the situation than provided by @email@example.com. It looks like you were quite thorough in your comparison, which is great!
I think it’s positive to see what people think of the project, if and how they use it, and what they report experiencing the app.
I shared it because it’s a recent video, and I wanted something to say ‘hi’ with:) But it’s a topic I hear more often so it’s not completely crap. Mental Outlaw, a much more serious Youtuber, also denounced ddg.
Are you serious? I don’t care how popular someone is. I can create my own view of the world.
It looks like you are supporting the butchering of ddgo. What’s your suggested alternative? Brave search?
Well gosh, you read a lot into my motivations based on a Hello World post. Thanks for that. Note to self: YouTube video’s with people sharing their opinion is evil on Lemmy. Also, don’t discuss search engines, or basically anything else here.
You don’t make it better by saying that video is opinion. That video is pure rubbish.
Searx. It’s not centralized and is open-source.

This all doesn’t matter. It’s not about brave here. If a dev of a well respected privacy browser (librewolf) shares a video where someone talks straight bs you need to question why he shares it.
If you share something online, this is either just for fun, or you follow an agenda. If a dev of librewolf shares criticism about ddgo, he supports it. If he wouldn’t support it, he wouldn’t have shared this exact video. A video with 0 views and where someone talks most of the time about ddgo and not librewolf. This leads to the conclusion that he’s not happy about the decision that ddgo is the default browser search engine. Hence, he wants an alternative, and some people scream for brave search to get rich with their monopoly money. That’s why I asked if brave search is the alternative.
There is no other alternative. Startpage uses google’s results and each search query gets directly send to google. If you use it instead of google, you won’t contribute to lowering google’s power and in the long run a better world. Qwant? Is on a good way but it’s partly owned by Axel Springer. And having google is probably better than if Axel Springer is in charge of delivering the worlds search results. Mojeek? If you want to search for something you can’t find anywhere else, it’s great. But not for every day.
There’s nothing left here. We are all stuck with ddgo.
Noone likes that ddgo censores rt but it gets its search results from bing so you always have microsofts censoring and noone cares about that either. If you want rt, you go directly to their website, or subscribe to the rss feed. If you search for news specificly from rt, you type
Site:rt.com RandomStringand you’ll still get your desired results. Anyone can shit on ddgo that they did it, but if you are in the position that has an impact you always think twice before positing controversal stuff regarding your own product.
Btw choosing brave search as a search engine for librewolf is a bad idea because that’ll only lead to people using brave in the long run. Because most people don’t make educated decisions and they’ll stick to what they see every day, i.e. brave, even though it’s worse than librewolf.
nice to see you around enjoying the chilled lemmy vibe, welcome :-)
It took a while, but we’re getting here… slowly :D
