Lemmy replaces Reddit, and we have Pixelfed for Instagram and Mastodon for Twitter. But what is a federated discord alternative ?
I’ts more of a protocol right ? I’ve heard about that one, but I struggled to use it though the thunderbird integrated client for matrix. I might give it another chance with a better client though
I use element for Matrix and it’s pretty similar to the Discord client.
I’ll give it a try thx
Yes, matrix is the protocol behind the tech.
As @krause said, element is the most popular client with matrix.org as the most popular instance. If you’re looking to setup your own instance, check out synapse.
Matrix for an actually federated protocol with E2EE.
Revolt for discord-like, normie-friendly experience. No privacy features or federation as of yet.The most obvious answer you’ll get is https://matrix.org/ which is a protocol, and the flagship app is element, but there are many more clients.
However for an almost identical experience there is also https://revolt.chat/
Idk if this is federated but the Matrix chat protocol usually comes up when discussing Discord alternatives

Maybe Matrix
Matrix i would think
I haven’t tried it but someone mentioned this in another thread.
revolt isn’t federating tho
It’s not using activityPub but isn’t the principle idea kinda the same? Revolt is open source and you can host your own server, and then each user can decide to which one to subscribe to using the client.
The servers are not talking to each other per se (I don’t really see the need for that anyway in software like this), but your client will look a lot like a fediverse once you populate it with dozens of different instances of revolt. At least that was my understanding of it, correct me if im wrong.
Federating (in case of software) means that the servers are talking between each other.
In case of Revolt, it’s just selfhosted. And you need an account for every server.
For now it’s not federating, so each instance is it’s how “platform”. They mention it on their faq, it’s not planned to go federated for now, but they are opened for discussion about it. So maybe in the future we will see an activity pub powered discord alternative !
Revolt doesn’t have federation. Here is the reason why: https://developers.revolt.chat/faq/federation
revolt.chat looks interesting, although not federated.
it looks pixel perfect to discord wow
You have Revolt for that :)

real life
deep
I joined kbin, mastodon, and pixelfed while deleting my Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I’m not ready yet to give up Discord. I love activities and being able to use their built in games to play with my mom who lives far away from me.
