They are not only shitposting but also mass brigading, running down discussions to the ground.

Spoiler alert, federated networks made up of small-time server owners are extremely vulnerable to both human and AI driven propaganda, dissemination, manipulation etc.

I predict that unfortunately lemmy and the other fediverse networks are doomed. We have maybe a few years at most, then only paywalled serviced will be able to stand up against the onslaught.

Would you be willing to pay like ~$2 dollars a month to avoid this? Or are you expecting solutions for free?

I dunno I feel like people who are smart in programming and network analysis and design could look at the models that propagandists use and identify the weak points then design the network such that it’s impossible or at least extremely difficult to succeed at mass propaganda.

Like, propaganda needs design. It needs consistency in message. It needs to be simple. Otherwise even if you get thousands of actual humans to go out to spread it, they’ll fuck up the propaganda and it gets diluted. Never mind imitative “AI” just predicting the next word(s).

Now that might mean some nominal monthly fee to go to a fund that is shared by the smart people fighting the propaganda. But it surely doesn’t mean our only choice is a for profit entity with opaque policies and goals.

Read up The Dark Forest Theory of Internet. Therein lies the solution.
