I saw an article today about how Abe had been photographed with prominent Yakuza members. My knowledge of Japan is pretty limited at the moment though, so I don’t want to speculate too much.
The video from the assassination has surfaced and I would say you are absolutely correct - none of the guards are even looking in the direction the killer came from, and after the first shot they didn’t attempt to get Abe off the stage, or cover him or anything at all.
If he didn’t have some sort of special security detail, that fact is in and of itself an indication.
That is not always the case, see Olof Palme. But i think that one murder changed much in the topic. For example, in Poland, Jarosław Kaczyński, despite not holding any office any more, do get state bodyguards because they aren’t even pretending he’s not the real head of state with president and PM being just his puppets.
In America this is probably true. But Japan is a very peaceful country without much violence (political or otherwise). It would not suprise me if security was very lax. Same here in Europe. People regularly spot the Dutch PM on his bike waiting a red light.

It could have been the Yakuza. Abe and before him were in campaign of getting Yakuza out of prominent power, so it may be the case.

He’s also got a shitton of private security, from the “Grom Group” company
