It’s also about that. It’s just not a good name in general. GIMP’s main proprietary competitor is a verb now, but you can’t really say GIMP as a verb without it coming off badly.

The sad thing is it didn’t have to come to this. GNU Image Manipulation Program could be abbreviated “GNU Imp” and have a cute demon mascot. But, for some reason, the developers were resistant to that idea as well.

yeah same, I don’t like using a bdsm reference in professional conversation or when talking to relatives.

It’s not a reference though. GIMP stands fro Gnu Image Manipulation Program. In fact the original term is so absolutely and extremely rare that I dare you to count how many pages in on google you need to dig deep to see any bdsm related results.

In Google results yes, but @SirLotsaLocks@lemmy.ml asked about (I assume, verbal) conversations. For someone who doesn’t know the GIMP editor, what are the chances that they’ll visualize some latex fetish when you mention it?

Exactly, what are the chances? For example I hadn’t even heard of the word gimp as in BDSM context before this and I’m actually into BDSM.

You also have to realize big big majority of the world is not USA. For example there are 1Billion people in India and they often learn how to use GIMP in schools, just by that scale alone latex definition has no right to even compete with GIMP — the Gnu Image Manipulation Program.

I’m actually from a French-speaking country, but assumed that the whole discussion was centered on English-speaking countries (since “gimp” is an English word), and thought that “gimp” was a well-kown BDSM term. So yeah, it sounds like all of this drama around G.I.M.P. is a consequence of a vocal minority.
