I figured since the situation is still ongoing, a megathread may be easier to follow.

Some general info to know:

  • the conflict erupted in the evening of May 11 (local time) as Israel was moving settlers into the town of Sheik Jarrah AND moving worshippers from the Al-Aqsa mosque, the third most important mosque to Islam, on the second to last day of Ramadan. Protests erupted and the IDF was sent in to stop them and disperse the crowd, and violence ensued.
  • In retaliation, several Muslim countries and groups came in support of Palestine, and Palestinian militaries (Hamas and Jihad) started launching rockets at military and industrial targets in Israel.
  • The situation has been ongoing since then and has escalated. Israel has launched missiles to Gaza in retaliation, hitting civilian targets (however the buildings seemed empty).
  • As of 5pm today (local time), 56 Palestinian civilians died at the hands of the Israeli strikes, including 14 children. A couple civilian deaths were recorded in Israel in the same timeframe.
  • Israel has an aerial defence system called the iron dome that basically launches missiles as soon as it detects a rocket to collide in mid-air. That system costs 50k-100k$ per rocket intercepted, while Hamas rockets cost 400$ to produce. It seems to be a matter of who has the biggest stockpile and who will run out first. Clearly the system is overwhelmed as there are many videos of Gaza rockets hitting their target.
  • Clashes are erupting in Israeli territory against Arabs (even if they are citizens) and Palestinians. Nationalist Israeli groups are going around targeting people and their shops.

Update on casualties: 181 Palestinians killed, including 52 children and 31 women, 1225 wounded so far.

We’re talking about the situation on a Discord now and Hamas has just launched their 7th barrage on Israel, hitting here:

And they are preparing their 8th barrage. The Iron Dome, Israel’s aerial defence system, is saturated and very expensive – it costs 50-100k to launch a missile at an enemy rocket (and sometimes they launch two for one target), while Hamas rockets cost 400$ to produce. It is not able to deal with the onslaught.

Iraqi Resistance forces have also announced their readiness to join the fight with Palestine if they are called to help, and it seems Turkey is moving troops towards the border but we don’t know more yet.

Israel has moved tanks into Gaza and Hamas has deployed anti-tank brigades to meet them.

Remember that all this time Hamas has been targetting military infrastructure and industry, while Israel is targetting civilian buildings. If you saw the video of the appartment building they blew up (which I think was empty), then realize they just made 100 families homeless.

Thanks for the info! Where is the map from? I’m curious to find more sources on whats happening. Might also be worth creating a /c/palestine community.

Edit: it’s from this account https://twitter.com/CumtaAlertsEng, I’ll see if I can find the interactive map too.

Looking at the tweets Israel has been hit by missiles nonstop for at least 2 hours now, and they’re not stopping. This also forces civilian airplanes to stay on the ground.

I have also found this tweet https://twitter.com/disclosetv/status/1392457037129334786, but we don’t know how trustful it is.

Hamas’ al-Qassam Brigades issues new ultimatum to Israel: Withdraw from #AlAqsaMosque and #SheikhJarrah or “100 times” more rockets will be fired at 6pm towards new targets.

It’s currently 4:20PM in Israel so we’ll see in less than two hours.
