I really hate that I need a PayPal account to order there. But my current phone is already breaking so I will buy it anyway.

It comes with more RAM (3GB vs. 2GB), more storage (32GB vs. 16GB) and a dock, so that you can connect your phone to a proper screen (HDMI), keyboard, mouse (2xUSB) and Ethernet cable.

That’s the “convergence” aspect. You’re supposed to be able to use it as a phone and a (weak) desktop computer.

Very interesting phone, and seems to be priced very moderately. But, as I compared the hardware to my current phone, the Samsung Galaxy S2, I found that I don’t have much benefits. 2 or 3 GB or RAM is of course always nice. Double the process power is also nice, though only through more cores. One single core seems to have the same performance. The GPU is literally the same chip. Nice is that there is hardware support for disk encryption. NFC is not there, as is wireless charging. Honestly… I don’t really know if that is enough for me to switch. Purely hardware-wise, though. The bigger screen is of course also kinda nice, though I like the small device I have now. I can easily fit it into any pocket I have.

The benefit of course is that there are multiple operating systems available. That seems like a very interesting aspect and leaves room for experimentation and tinkering. However, after owning the Openmoko Freerunner and the Nokia N900, which also were Linux phones, the fun might end at any point, and then you’re pretty much on your own. I’d love to see one of those devices actually gaining enough movement, but I’m not sure if it will be this time. And I’m not sure if I want to tinker that much to have a daily driver.

Maybe I’m still happy with the hardware I already own, even when it is old. It still works, and there are still FOSS releases for it, albeit not as frequent and plenty as back then.

The Pinephone community edition is not just another phone. It is an open source focused phone which is not aimed at “commercial success”.

That was true as well for the Freerunner, and to some degree also for the N900. Regarding commercial success: Commercial success at least in the form that the company can continue what it does. Without financial support from sales, they can’t. Hence the part about “ongoing development”.

I’ve seen too many projects go down the drain. For example the project that was about to bring new hardware for the N900, while still having the old case and display and all that. Very nice idea, very good thoughts about privacy and all that… but in the end, there were a few boards produced at extreme costs… but nothing came out of it. The project ceased to exist.

At least, this time, it is rather cheap, but still… I just don’t want to tinker too much lately. Maybe I’m getting to old for this shit. :D

But my best wishes and all the luck and success in the world goes to any project trying this. It would be awesome if they succeed.
