The Pinephone community edition is not just another phone. It is an open source focused phone which is not aimed at “commercial success”.
That was true as well for the Freerunner, and to some degree also for the N900. Regarding commercial success: Commercial success at least in the form that the company can continue what it does. Without financial support from sales, they can’t. Hence the part about “ongoing development”.
I’ve seen too many projects go down the drain. For example the project that was about to bring new hardware for the N900, while still having the old case and display and all that. Very nice idea, very good thoughts about privacy and all that… but in the end, there were a few boards produced at extreme costs… but nothing came out of it. The project ceased to exist.
At least, this time, it is rather cheap, but still… I just don’t want to tinker too much lately. Maybe I’m getting to old for this shit. :D
But my best wishes and all the luck and success in the world goes to any project trying this. It would be awesome if they succeed.
