There are two Google products that I still use directly: maps and translate. I use maps because OSM data for my city is weak (I’m currently working on this) and there doesn’t seem to be a good enough replacement for translate. That’s where Apertium comes in! The issue is, translation data is sorely lacking. If any of you guys are bilingual, please give them a helping hand, and please contribute translations to Lemmy as well! Let’s kick Google out of our lives!

I wish there was a way for me to help with german translation. But I genuinely have no idea how to help here. Could someone guide me or broadly explain the steps for me, please?

The Github for the project lies here. You’d want to use git to ‘pull’ the repository on your computer. Then you’d want to open up the translation file for German (de.ts). It should be in /ui/src/translations/ , which is where the English translation file (en.ts) is as well. Use the English translation file as a reference, and translate the text between quotes to German. Next, you’ll want to make a ‘pull request’, which can be quite tricky.

Check out a git tutorial if you need any help. See this page if you want to know more about pull requests. If this is all too complicated, feel free to just do the translation part and send me the file. I’ll make a patch file that can then be applied to the project, assuming /u/Dessalines would be willing to accept a patch file instead of a pull request.

Hey /u/dessalines, my French is a bit rusty but I’ve actually been teaching myself the language for quite some time. I’ve messaged a friend on Mastodon regarding completing the Spanish translation but I also have an irl friend who also knows Spanish.

In French, mentions = mentions & replies = réponses

At least that’s what the readme on your github suggests?

Yes, but it was missing the translation for those two words, along with those two words for Spanish.

I’ll accept PRs for language corrections.

I’d gladly make a pull request, but I sadly no longer have a Github account. I could consider making another one, but it’s unlikely, as I’m even considering deleting my Gitlab account. If anyone else could make the pull request, it’d be greatly appreciated.

            Do patch (diff) files count?
