Its mostly bad, but my alt history brain needs an outlet

I preffer eu4 tbh, and if you are an steam user, dont buy dlcs, just pirate them. About hoi4, it is the simplest history strategy game of paradox, the runs are a lot shorter, there is no economy stuff, no money, and the games are aways based around the ww2, with is not bad, but it is a lot less diverse then other paradox games. The combat is the most fleshed out part of the game, but it is not that hard to understand after you learn about the op templates and how to encircle troops. The alt history is most frequent on dlc countries, and it depends mostly on how good or bad the focus trees are (some countries are better with the original generic tree then their dlc ones). About politics, it is more boring then bad really; blue are the “democratics” countries, browns is the "fascist countries, red is the “communists” countries, and grey are the “neutral” countries, the first three are self explanatory, but the neutral ones sucks because of how bland it is, neutral can go from the KMT, to monarchys, to anarchism, to dictatorships, to chinese cliques, and its so annoying how little thought its but into it. Even the three actual ideologies are bland, democratic countries sucks ass, fascists are the ones you play when you want to win fast, and communists are for when you want to be based. The mods makes politics a lot better because there is actual nuance, even if its from an liberal mind, instead of the blandness of the vanilla game.

They took out all the good parts of HoI out of the game, then slowly started re-adding them in paid DLCs lmao

I hate Paradox’s DLC model so much

Literally just go to rutracker or cs.rin.ru and use a site translator browser addon, the only pirate forums that’s not a den of malware and aids are all russian sites.

        Same with CK3.

“Yeah, we took most of the CK2 mechanics out, but we’ll bring them back in paid DLCs that we’ll make for next decade lmao”

Most mechanics they took out were outright trash. Mostly because they were cash grabs disconnected from one another in an quick $ effort and then abandoned to flaunt on the wind, but still. CK3 seems to integrate mechanics way better, but it will still be 10 years since their pace of development is significantly slower than any previous PDX game.

Its an more older and bigger paradox game focused on the time between the renaissence till the napoleonic era. Its an more complicated, longer, dlc dependent, diverse and detailed game then HOI4 (if you have the dlcs, it sucks ass without them, but its very good with them, so pirate life for the win) but its a lot less casual then hoi4, while HOI4 have an very basic time of an medium of 7 to 9 years for run, EU4 can go to the 200/300.

The hoi4 community is absolute cancer, but the game is fine imo. It’s enjoyable in a healthy way, but the moment you start considering yourself a “hoi4 player” it’s over, much like for people who identify as “redditors”.

when it comes to mods, it can be fun if you don’t take it seriously. Yeah, most people who make these are completely politically and historically illiterate (communist mussolini because he was a socialist for like 15 minutes goes brrrr), but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun playthrough.

Yeah, the TL;DR is that the game and its mods are nice. Just don’t approach it thinking it is anything more than a game.

Devs seem to stop giving a damn and turn the game to a full blown Fascist wet dream for the last few DLCs.

I’m more of a Stellaris person than HoI4 anyway, so…

I don’t think the game itself is good, but if you get some mods you can turn it into a decently enjoyable game

the community is just utter fucking garbage though like holy shit

It’s most boring of flag PDX games. Their strenght was always the long term prolonged games when you could do anything, like conquer entire world as Cherokee or something like that. HoI is nothing like this.

      • Yeah, no other PDX game have so fast map colouring. Fun fact: blobbing always cause incredible butthurt among the PDX forum crowd except HoI where the game is way too short to have any after conquest problems, and surprisingly Imperator Rome, where 2/3rds of interesting start positions is blocked by huge default blobs that will annihilate you.

I like that one and red flood but the other ones I don’t really touch. I’ve heard some good things about The New Order and kinda want to do a Soviet Union restoration run but haven’t got around to it.

How about Stellaris? You can roleplay a communist civilization in Stellaris.

I am personally looking forward to Victoria 3. Hopefully you won’t have to micromanage as much if you play a communist country.

I like it. Looks pretty, nice gameplay, and I can turn off my brain when I play it. I’d give it a 6.5/10. Maybe a 7 on a good day

Paradox games seem incredibly complex just to learn how to play. The only one I actually learned was Stellaris, and they just kept messing with the game to the point where it’s completely different and I no longer know how to play it.

If you want a based alt hist game check out Ostalgie: The Berlin Wall (Magnet link) and other games made by Kremlingames (except the dogshit that is Crisis in the Kremlin). Probably the only map game dev that makes games in the cold war era that doesnt have state dept propaganda smeared all over it.
