I did a quick Lemmy search and didn’t find much. Are there any suggested domain registrars that aren’t evil? I’m mostly looking for domain name and not hosting right now but won’t exclude them. This would be my first domain so I’m new.
I saw njalla, banhof, and 1984 web hosting. Are these good, or any other suggestions?
Edit: DDNS would be a plus
Privacy has become a very important issue in modern society, with companies and governments constantly abusing their power, more and more people are waking up to the importance of digital privacy.
In this community everyone is welcome to post links and discuss topics related to privacy.
much thanks to @gary_host_laptop for the logo design :)
njalla is what i use. i like it since they’re not technically a domain registrar. they are the “middleman” for you.
i’m also a big fan of how they responded to DHL
They response is brutal
Brutal. But in a good way.
I ended up going with njalla. Quite simple and they take crypto. For the record they do offer Dynamic DNS.
Nice
Not been able to find a good registrar. Gandi is a fake shithole, all the other ones too. I decided if I couldn’t get ethical domains I would just get cheap ones, so cloudflare.
Stay tuned for names.sr.ht, they will charge 20$ a year to allow you to register unlimited domains with zero markup, and profit sustainably without data collection from that tiny subscription fee (plus tons of DevOps). They are waving the 20$ a year for people who can’t afford it without any questions, and the platform is open source.
NOTE: names.sr.ht has nothing, go directly to sr.ht to learn more about the platform
Re ethical hosting:
I’m impartial to uberspace, so many pluses!
♥️ (Not sponsored, I hope it becomes obvious these are good services when you visit their respective homepages)
Sounds fake as hell
Zero markup as in most domain providers charge you 30$ for a domain that costs 20$, but sr.ht will charge you 20$ for the domain provided you’re paying that 20$ a year fee.
Cloudflare also does zero markup domains, just so you know it does exist.
Care to elaborate?
They strike me as little improvement, for a steep “ethics” markup. Of course, price is not a huge factor, but their site tells a different story then their goals. They claim to support net neutrality but fail to demonstrate action. They claim to stand up to large monopolies, but they strive to be one, offering a website builder, wordpress hosting, flash sales, referrals, and a crappy rebrand. They are not open source as they attempt to mislead. They do try, I suppose, and they live up to their claims to a certain degree with decent support and donations to open projects.
Just one screenshot for context
Thanks for the insight! I’m interested in how sr.ht turns out.
Easydns are respected in the industry.
They also have a pro freedom CEO, and used to send out news letters covering intl privacy issues in tech.
I have experience with all 3 of the above companies and can recommend each as reputable.
Njalla - This is a service which owns a domain legally for you. This means that you are putting trust in them that cannot be reversed.
Banhof - One of the few ISPs in the world to consistently stand up for privacy.
1984hosting - Support the right to be forgotten
Ultimately all modern webhosts offer whois privacy, but look for companies with strong data compliance policies.
I went with Njalla and have enjoyed them so far. I’ll keep banhof in mind
What do you mean by “evil”? I use Namesilo, which includes " free" privacy whois and it’s overall moderately cheap but I’m unsure if this is what you mean or if they are considered somewhat shady.
I just mean they are trustworthy with my info and aren’t difficult to deal with
