Want to get the discussion started and don’t know enough to be scared or not: because of the decentralization of Lemmy, is it extremely vulnerable to malicious/ad bots, astroturfing, spam and such?
I would say it’s just as vulnerable to spam/ad bots, but even less vulnerable to stuff such as ddos attacks due to its decentralized nature.
An explosion of bot accounts has already been a problem and I think it’s being handled.
The fact there’s a good number of servers could result in greater vulnerability, but also there’s an amount of obscurity. Hard to say which is more vulnerable to attack. I mean a centralized server is going to be a bigger, more visible target.
The admins and mods are the ones who deal with this stuff and it’s mostly transparent to users. It’s a matter of workload for the people running things. If it becomes untenable, we won’t have enough instances to support growth and that could be damaging.
It’s really hard to say how these unknowns will affect things. Just have to carry on and deal with it as it comes.
That’s a perfect explanation. Thank you
