There’s only a few things I need to figure out and Lemmy can become a permanent home. Third party apps in development are all showing great potential, so I’m not worried about that. I’m currently using wefwef but have tested mlem and soon memmy and they are all great (or appear to be trending towards great).
Good post/question; been wondering similar last couple weeks. Have to say I’m beyond impressed with the mobile offerings, and the speed at which they’re being developed.
One thing I’m curious about is that since there’s no “central” I find it a bit confusing to know what communities to look for on other instances. Does setting it to all allow me to see posts from all other instancees that are federated and have been pulled in by other users of my instance?
Setting it to all shows you posts from all federated instances. As for the communities, I’m guessing as more people sign up and lemmy becomes more popular there’s gonna be some that are going to become the “main” ones. I’ve seen someone on github suggest they should add hashtags and use that to group all communities with the same name from different instances so that might become a thing
Ah cool that hashtag idea sounds promising—I’d certainly welcome a way to “group” a bunch of similar topic communities under one sort of view.
Welcome! I’m still figuring this out myself, but I hope I can help.
I don’t know how it works on each app, but if you go on the website and scroll all the way down there’s an ‘instances’ option that shows you every linked and blocked instance. Alternatively you can go to (yourInstanceURLHere)/instances and see the same thing.
I believe the load times are because of the amount of people using/signing up on this instance. It’s going to get better when they upgrade the server, but you can make an account on another instance (I recommend doing that) and use that when you can’t use this one. You can see more servers on join-lemmy.org/instances or if you want more info/data on the-federation.info/platform/73

Thanks for that trick about seeing blocked instances! I’ll have to go through a handful of blocked instances and see of there’s anything of value (probably not).
I guess I’ll have find a secondary instance given the current loading times
