For the first time ever I had to manually download dictionary files (to my e-reader). So I headed online expecting to find a clear king-of-the-hill free & open English-English dictionary, but it turned out that this was easier said than done.
With my brief search I found the StarDict dictionaries, available here.
So, this is thread about open dictionaries!
- Share you’re favourite dictionaries
- Is StarDict the go-to?
- General thoughts on the matter
This actually looks really nice. So it’s able to generate standard dictionaries from Wiktionary, which is probably the best source available. I wonder if the magic is within the app or is it a feature of Wiktionary?
The dictionaries that are offered within the app are actually hosted here: https://github.com/rdoeffinger/Dictionary/releases/v0.3-dictionaries
So, it requires pre-processing of the Wiktionary-data. The steps for that are described here: https://github.com/rdoeffinger/Dictionary#generating-dictionaries
