I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I live in the downtown core, and have been here since the early 2000’s. In 2009 I moved beside this place locally referred to as ‘crack macs’, a 24-hr convenience store known for people selling drugs, fighting, craziness and other things like that. After moving here and noticing the shenanigans happening outside at all times, I wanted to keep a journal of it, or a log, just for fun. Twitter was relatively new at the time, and it’s 140 character limit seemed like a good fit, so on August 31st 2009, I made @crackmacs on Twitter. I think FB/IG came in 2014, and the blog. The nickname for the location has existed since sometime in the 1980s.
It’s been over 10 years now and blogging/social media is now my full time job. I write about Calgary things, share news, fun stuff, emergencies, etc. Have over 100k mostly local followers, 30+FB groups for local topics, and a busy Discord server. We sell ad space and stuff. It’s really turned out great. The name itself hasn’t aged very well tbh. The 24-hr convenience store, “Mac’s”, re-branded to Circle K a couple of years ago, and the city has changed significantly in that time. It’s not nearly as bad as it used to be.
Been a fun ride so far.
Also Lemmy is awesome and I can’t wait for it to explode.
