    Because they desperately want to avoid a brain drain to China. Former Chinese nationals who went to school in the West and stayed in Western academia are already going back in droves because of, oh I don’t know, the full-on mask off Asian hate in conjunction with the blatant science denialism in the West maybe, and it’s honestly a matter of time before a ton of non-Chinese people start seeking academic careers in China too, basically a reverse to how Chinese people were seeking careers in the West (before the West really started going to shit and prompted a ton of them to go back).

      I don’t really see it happening tbh. China doesn’t seem to be that desperate to grab any talent they can (unlike certain other places). Not to mention other factors

        I wouldn’t be so sure. China has been gradually making it easier for non-Chinese people, even Westerners, to live and work there lately, whereas previously it was extremely closed off and basically no one could get any sort of residence. Whether this is directly in response to an influx of people wanting to move to China or for some other reason I’m not sure though.
