Magnificent desolation
Some CA trees have evolved to reproduce via fire (some other areas too - think of the pretty fireweed). This is mother nature and humans got in the way.
It seems possible enough to get rid of a large portion of our ‘disposables’. But, we’d need people and countries working together - to agree on it and enforce it- for that to happen. I think that could possibly be a 15 - 20% improvement. Ex: all toothbrushes sold must have removable/interchangeable heads. The concept is to sell a better quality head and a better quality…um…handle. So the two could be sold separately.
Same with pens. If there were 4 basic sizes of inserts, we could invest in prettier holder pens and buy the ink from another producer or store. The ink barrels would be interchangeable. The packaging therefore for the heads of toothbrushes and for the ink barrels would be smaller and thus cheaper to ship. There are many items this could work for: lipstick, chapstick, clear tape, etc. If we forced manufacturers to use standard sizes and colors for plastic containers (foods and toiletries for starters), maybe they could focus more on the quality of what is inside the container and less on the attractiveness of the container. Obviously, the shape and/or color for foods wouldn’t be the same as for toiletries. The same could be done with glass jars. Too some extent, some jar tops are rather standard (the ones that look like a bullseye). But, standard sizes means far easier to recycle by simply deep cleaning. That would mean certain chemicals couldn’t be used. Even if only a standard color and type of plastic (not shape) was used, i’d think that would make melting down plastics for recycling would be easier. The fabric bags some of us bring with us for our groceries could all come in standard sizes so that packing is easier - maybe a standard form at the grocery store keeps the bag wide open for putting things in at check out.
