A tl:dr; of what the brain-geniuses over at “hacker” news think about lemmy:

    • Lemmy.ml has a code of conduct? What about my ❄ 🍑 es!!!
    • Having an optional slur filter is worse than the holocaust.
    • What is federation? Sounds like it can’t work. Back to twitter and reddit.
    • Echo chambers are bad when left-wing, good when right-wing.
    • So you have two communities with the same name on two different sites, but they’re different??? I can’t figure this out and I’m literally a hacker!
    • The devs are literal Marxists!!! Screams in terror and dies immediately.
    • So you have two communities with the same name on two different sites, but they’re different??? I can’t figure this out and I’m literally a hacker!

Two different computers communicating on the same network??? That’ll never happen!!!

Let them clutch their pearls. The more they scream bloody murder the more people will become aware of our community and come to see what we’re about. A significant portion of them will stick around.

    Favorite comment so far:

As to “the rest of the civilized world”, as pointed out several times now, very little of the “civilized” world has strong speech protections. Germany? Laws against Holocaust denial and defamatory fake news[1], which sounds Orwellian.

Pretty funny because it was made optional and customizeable like a year and a half ago. But these nerds won’t let it go that the lemmy devs wouldn’t let them say the n word.

The admins are literal marxists (I do mean literal, check the admin profiles), and have designed the technology wanting “to make it very difficult for racist trolls to use the most updated version of Lemmy.” https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/622

Having ideological censorship baked into the base system seems like not an optimal approach.

Kind of a self report if your ideology depends on using slurs, don’t you think?

What I really hate about this website is their stupidty and cryptofascist tendencies are on full display here but they regularly have “philosophical” articles on their front page so they can pretend to be intellectuals. It is somehow worse than Reddit which is saying a lot.

    Another classic:

The real Lemmy wouldn’t have a rude word filter. He’d let you use the rude word, and if you got punched in the mouth for using it he’d use that as a teachable moment. Be more Lemmy.

    • New feature idea for lemmy: make a setting when you upload a picture that resizes it to presets. Like type “emoji” in the [] hyperlink field to make it the size of an emoji.

Someone put it on the git repo I am not good with computer

LMAO wolfball admin saying that the site is a-political while having a picture of a person who broke into the capital building as a banner, spreading COVID miss info and being nb fobic in the paragraph arguing they are not bigoted.

the linked thread about lemmy.ml was deleted CENSORED by the admin there, who said “a major thread 13 days ago makes the current submission a dupe” - despite that the thread 13 days ago was actually about lemmyBB, not lemmy.ml!!1!

(there was also another thread linking to the lemmy github back in June, so, arguably maybe it was a dupe by their standards, but still, I think this is an obvious first amendment violation.)

Not going to justify the HN stupidity, but it is my opinion the original poster should have linked joinlemmy.ml, instead of an instance of Lemmy (lemmy.ml). Because the topic of the discussion should be the Lemmy network, rather than the lemmy.ml instance. One should avoid spreading the misconception that Lemmy and lemmy.ml are the same thing.
