What does that red and black flag mean? I saw two lads on an electric scooter with one Ukrainian flag and one of those red and black flags in their hands in the city a few days ago. They hit a curb and fell flat on their face.

It’s the flag of the formal UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), which fought against the Soviet Union and Poland before and during WW2. Now it’s used by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalist (OUN), according to Wiki (so it cold be false) it’s supposed to mean “Ukrainian red blood spilled on Ukrainian black earth”

Oh! Saw a small group of Ukraine flag wavers months ago and one of them was repping the red and black.

Also, “Ukrainian red blood spilled on Ukrainian black earth” low-key sounds like “blood and soil” 😬

Almost as if that’s exactly what it is

“You see, black earth is a metaphor for the historical othering of Africa by white Europeans, and blood is metaphor for the slave trade. The Ukrainians are actually showing solidarity with people of color in the global south, and bravely telling us that Uighurs, African-Americans, and the free people of Ukraine are all united in a single struggle against prejudice and colonial oppression.” – Salon or the New York Times in about three weeks

The OUN […] similarly introduced a range of fascist principles and rituals, which became obligatory for all members of the movement, and which, after the establishment of the Ukrainian state, were to become obligatory for all citizens. The red-and-black flag, which symbolizes blood and soil (Ger. Blut und Boden), was one of them. These colors referred to the racist and proto-fascist German blood and soil ideology, which suggests the inseparability of a people (Rasse or Volk) and their “living space” (Lebensraum) as well as an attraction to the “soil,” which acquired spiritual and mythological connotations.
