(Chief, especially honorary Chief, was a distinction for a war leader – this was awarded to him during WW2)
Not only Sheik, but also Chief.
what’s the sheikh thing about?

Is there a photo of him actually receiving and/or wearing it? Cause that would be awesome.
any documentation for this?
“Chief Fallen Trees of the Mohawk Nation” “Stalin recently voted by the chiefs of the Indian Confederation of America as the outstanding warrior of 1941.”
I can’t find a copy of the article not paywalled though
Edit: Chief Fallen Trees was Chief of the Iroquois Mohawk, and the Confederation was a council of tribal leaders comprising 27 tribes from across the US, Canada and Central America
So the Mohawk Nation not “all Indian tribes” lol… I guess the hundreds of other tribes don’t matter here
Meanwhile sputniknews.com is running headlines like How Joseph Stalin Became the Chief of the American Indians.[0] Bizarrely this also claims it was the Indian Confederation of America that awarded him this. In 1943 they also awarded this to Dwight D . Eisenhower lol. Not sure if this is the same as Confederation of Indian Americans, the far-right group that tried to replace the BIA.
You’re thinking of the American Indian Federation, not a Confederation of tribes.
Edit: that’s obviously a sensationalist title (I’m not familiar with sputnik news) and the NY times ran two articles with equally sensationalist titles, but it was an honour chosen to recognize the USSR’s work against the Nazis that did include naming him an honourary war chief.
Yeah I think you’re right, thanks. And yeah I realized those are two different NY times articles from different decades entirely
EDIT: wrong NYTimes article. This one is much older. The one referenced above is actually here[1]. The article also has a quote by Chief Fallen Trees called Roosevelt “our Great White Father” lol
Hmm ok I got access to the article through The Wikipedia Library. I can’t share my link but if you have institutional access, you can see it here.[0] Even more strange is that this NYTimes article claims it was the Red Men of America. Which I truly hope is not the same thing as the Improved Order of Red Men. More helpfully it claims it was Chief Paul Horn who awarded this. He is a member of the Kootenai tribe

Hmm, I don’t have institutional access, are you perchance able to screenshot (or snip tool) it? I’ve seen that it’s likely the Iroquois Confederation, but it’s hard to confirm it because…y’know, America never gave a shit about accurately recording/naming Indigenous organizations
See my edit. I was looking at the wrong article 🤦. Yes here’s snippets. It’s… kinda bad :(
Never though I’d see Roosevelt called “Great White Father” that’s something else. the next year it was awarded to General MacArthur, and the year after that Eisenhower. I think “Red Men of America” was just a racist NYTimes thing, I haven’t found that to be the name of any organization.
My favourite part is when the photographers tried to get this other dude to wear it what the heck. You can’t just slap those on for a photoshoot if they’re not yours.
Edit: by favourite I hope it’s clear I mean this whole thing is so uncomfortable, right down to the very awkward way that they write about Indigenous people in this

Yeah there’s 0 mention of what tribe this is or who they represent lol. Turtle Island is home to hundreds of different languages and cultures. Although there was major cross-nation alliances and federations, there’s still at least 100 language groups in California alone.
I mean just look at this map: https://native-land.ca/
