I’d be totally okay with them giving both Microsoft and NVidia the finger by disallowing these glue layers as long as there’s a stable kernel release which will receive security updates for 5-7 years where people can continue to use their graphics cards until it’s time to upgrade to AMD.
I’m currently using a GTX 1070 which was gifted to me for dev purposes so I’m planning on letting it run its course, but I’m not happy with needing the proprietary drivers on my otherwise libre system, (excluding user applications like Steam, Spotify and games, which are installed independently from my NixOS system configuration).
Hmm…interesting. I guess the takeaway I get is almost “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”. This kind of conflict seems inevitable when you write GPL licensed code, and so you’re pretty much either gonna hurt yourself by blocking off useful software/hardware, or sacrifice your principles for functionality with something like a “GPL condom”.
