Also: Telegram’s encrypted messaging system cannot honestly be called “open source.” It’s not like viewing public accounts on social media, which is what “open source” usually means in this context.

Wait, what? Am I misreading that, or are they suggesting that open source just means when you have a public social media profile?

Maybe I’m just getting old, on the older side of what qualifies as millenial, but I am far, far, far from an expert on programming or anything programming open source. I have a casual level interest in FOSS and linux and can, say, install linux on a hard drive and search google for command line tools.

But even I can see this clear and vulgar loss of extremely basic knowledge from people who seem to have heard about it second hand. It’s like even what little I know will be passed to the next generation through a game of telephone that makes me an expert relative to whoever writes articles like these.

I think they totally missed what open source is. Which is kind of odd for techdirt.

It seems Telegram got recognised as the most secure messaging app early on, and it will take a lot of time for people to realise that it is not.

I think it will also take for Signal to launch their username feature. Many people don’t feel comfortable sharing their phone number with groups of people they don’t know.
