The fabled “Year of the Linux Desktop” has never materialized, and it likely never will. Does that mean Linux on a desktop PC is irrelevant? Not at all! Desktop Linux is still awesome.
I think what we need to do is advocate for linux to be used in schools and educational situations. It helps to teach tech literacy and shows them that technology no matter how different isn’t terribly confusing once you have a basic understanding of how things work. I also think it would be great for people who don’t use computers much at all, like my grandma. All she does is watch youtube and check emails and stuff. If she had a linux laptop it wouldn’t effect her experience at all.
think of the money saved on windows lisence. IME instructors get a little irritated when you point out foss alternatives (I.e. I used octave in a matlab course which went fine but irritated the instructor a bit) I think that teachers and staff would resist a switch to anything unfamiliar.
Yeah people do not like change, but what if instead of just jumping ship you switched to foss teaching tools on windows that also worked on linux so you could spread out the switch instead of throwing teachers in and saying goodluck.
